Comment on 3 Lesser Known Travel Destinations for Wine Enthusiasts in 2013 by Terry

Of the three wine regions that Leo suggests to visit, Kathy and I have visited Oregon's Willamette Valley several times and the Columbia Gorge area a couple times. Wine Enthusiasts interested in visiting the Willamette Valley wineries should spend some time researching. The area is a little over an hour’s drive from Portland. Avoid rush hour driving as the drive will increase due to the heavy traffic. Not all wineries are opened every season or every day. Check with the winery you want to visit to see if they will be open during the time of your visit. It would be great to spend a week or longer in the Willamette Valley; however, lodging can be a challenge. Make your lodging arrangements early.

A new trend is taking place in Portland. Wineries and tasting rooms are starting up in the city. The business model follows the approach of bringing the winery to the people rather than taking the people to the winery. Many of these city wineries have vineyards in the Willamette Valley or source fruit from Oregon vineyards.
We have found that Oregon is a wonderful wine travel state. Do your research ahead of time. There are hundreds of wineries open even though there are also many that are closed during the week.

One mistake that wineries can make is to push consumers to buy. I certainly understand that a winery needs to make ends meet but if one does not like any of the wines then they should not feel obligated to buy a bottle. On the other hand if a visitor discovers a wine they like they should consider buying it. After all how many companies give away samples of their products day after day?

If you go to a tasting room, whether they charge or not and then tell your friends and family to visit that tasting room, you are providing marketing for the winery. That marketing is valuable.

Cheers! Kathy

When I first started visiting tasting rooms I was hesitant to make reservations. Since then I have learned that wineries require appointments for several reasons, and that one-on-one attention, when done right, can make for a great experience. One word of caution. I think the personalized attention makes it more difficult to walk away without making a purchase even if you have paid a tasting fee and don't care for the wine. Therefore, make appointments at wineries where the bottle price is well within your budget.
