This was where the majority of sparkling wines were made in the US during those early years. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote about about the Catawba grapes and the beautiful river, known as the Ohio River.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It was the Civil war and grape diseases that led to the demise of the grape industry in Ohio. Later the industry began\u00a0to develop again but Prohibition put a stop to the industry until the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Today Ohio has wineries in the North East, North West, South East and South West. Wine trails include:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lake Erie Shores &amp; Islands Wine Trail<\/li>\n<li>Vines &amp; Wines Wine Trail<\/li>\n<li>Capital City Wine Trail<\/li>\n<li>Canal Country Wine Trail<\/li>\n<li>Appalachian Wine Trail<\/li>\n<li>Ohio River Valley Wine Trail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wine grape types growing in Ohio include <em>vitis vinifera<\/em>, American and hybrids. Look for traditional wines as well as a variety of fruit wines.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for a fun event in Ohio, get your tickets for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitvintageohio.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vintage Ohio Wine Festival <\/a>taking place August 3rd and 4th.
