Standing Stone Vineyards
by
K.L. Sullivan

Standing Stone winery and tasting room is located in renovated barns. Here as we have seen at other wineries, the creative use of older structures is in play. We congratulate those who see the potential use of older buildings. As you travel past old run down houses and barns on the brink of falling down, is there a way to save them for another use?

Standing Stone Vineyards began production in 1993 and at the present time produces seven to eight thousand cases of wine. All of the wines here at Standing Stone Vineyards are made from the grapes they grow. Of all their wines, Pinnacle is a favorite red wine.

While the tasting room does not have a space set aside for sitting and enjoying a bottle of wine, Standing Stone has a large deck available with chairs and picnic tables. While on this day it was too cold and breezy to enjoy, it would make a delightful spot to enjoy wine and friendly conversation.

We learned that visitors to the winery could be divided roughly into thirds. One third come for tastings, one third come to taste and learn and one third come to drink.

Tours are available. A tasting fee is charged. They do not participate in many festivals.

According to our host, Standing Stone Vineyards was named after a Native American legend. This legend says that by building a pile of stone – one on top of another – with the largest on the bottom is good luck. We wish Standing Stone much good luck in their production of fine wine.

During an earlier visit to Standing Stone Vineyards the following wines were offered for tasting: Smokehouse Dry Vidal, Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinnacle, Smokehouse Red, and Vidal Ice.
