Chestnut Hill Background
Chestnut Hill Winery shares a portion of the building with a restaurant. The original winery closed and the property was available for sale. The current owners Harold, Nancy, Darrin, and Trudi Stryker purchased the property.
Nancy noted, “When you buy a business you know nothing about, hire someone who does.” They hired a winemaker, who Nancy acknowledges is one of the best winemakers in Tennessee.
Winery
The winery has 12 stainless steel tanks and oak barrels in a temperature controlled room. The winery has the capacity to produce 9700 cases of wine. Chestnut Hill uses Tennessee grape juice as well as juice from other states to produce their wines. All bottling and labeling is done by hand. They created a wood box to help with labeling. Nancy noted, “We make do with what we have.” They can bottle and label 2,500 bottles in three hours.
Chestnut Hill Winery tasting room is bright and cheerful with numerous gifts available for purchase. Look for an array of jams including red raspberry, plum cherry, Sorghum and strawberry. Refrigerated cheese is also available.
Chestnut Hill Wines
Mandolin Blanc was a straw color. There were nuances of yellow stone fruit on the taste. The finish was crisp with some citrus yielding to yellow stone fruit pits. Dulcimer White, a straw color offered an aroma and taste that was grapey with foxy nuances. The finish was crisp and yet somewhat sweet.
Blackberry offered blackberry notes throughout the taste including the aftertaste. Volunteer Peach as its name implies has peach notes throughout the taste. The wine dries on the finish with a bit of sweetness. This wine had a good balance. Hillbilly Shine Wine’s label includes, “Caution: Not to be mistaken for your Grandpa’s “Elbow Medicine.” This wine reminds some visitors of watermelon Jolly Ranchers.
