Summary: The Martinez & Martinez Winery tasting room and winery is located in the Winemaker’s Loft in Vintner’s Village of Prosser, Washington. Andrew Martinez, winemaker, produces wines from Horse Heaven Hills AVA vineyards, owned and maintained by the Martinez family.
Martinez & Martinez Vineyards is owned and operated by Kristy, Sergio, Andrew and Monica Martinez. Sergio grew up in Modesto, California. He has been growing grapes for 30 years. Eventually his son, Andrew, and daughter-in-law, Monica, persuaded him to build a winery.
Located in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, the estate vineyard was started by Sergio and Kristy Martinez with the three acres they planted in 1981. In 2011, the Martinez & Martinez owners have two vineyards in Horse Heaven Hills AVA including the Alder Ridge Vineyard. The Martinez family opened the winery in 2005. Andrew Martinez is the winemaker.
Tasting Room
Visitors to the tasting room are likely to meet one of the family members. The entrance to the tasting room is delightful. Located in the Winemaker’s Loft, the building is a Tuscan-style facility with Tuscan yellow facade. A small patio with bright, colorful flowers and tables and chairs provides a delightful ambience before entering into the tasting room where the ambience continues with cranberry walls, a small wood tasting counter with cushioned counter chairs and a mirror behind the tasting counter.
Behind the tasting room, wine barrels are stacked with aging wines. The Winemaker’s Loft is home to other several wineries and tasting rooms.
Wines
Viognier 2010 from Alder Ridge Vineyard offered aroma notes of fruit and perfume. The taste was crisp with fruit notes and apple hints. Cabernet Blanca 2010, Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the winery’s best seller. The wine was a beautiful light red color. The wine offered an aroma of red berries. The taste was sweet and fruity with notes of red fruit. The sweet finish had hints of strawberries and the wine was well-balanced.
Cesar Red Wine 2007, a ruby wine, was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Syrah. Aged in French oak for 30 months, the aroma had dark fruit notes with cedar nuances. The taste offered blackberry and blueberry notes. Bold tannins were on the fruity finish. Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 offered black fruit and cedar nuances while the taste had blackberry and cedar notes. The finish had tannins and blackberry nuances.
