Collectors and Wine

What is the oldest bottle of wine you own? I am curious because as a wine enthusiast I have met those who collect wines and cellar them as a hobby. Now this can get to be an expensive hobby. Therefore, I have a difficult time understanding why someone would choose to invest a substantial amount of money collecting wine that really might be the best wine in the world or hmm… it is possible that it might have cork taint, or perhaps it has been stored in heat or low humidity. In other words, how can you guarantee the wine is still excellent? Oh, right. Open the bottle and taste it. There goes the wine and the value of the bottle. I have had the opportunity to meet a collector of fine wines and asked him why he collects wine instead of investing in jewelry. He explained to me that not only is it about collecting fine wine but he is intrigued with the “chase” of the bottle of wine. It is a game for him.

For me, I prefer having a few bottles of wine in my cellar, that I can open one for dinner without dashing off to a wine store. Preferably, it will be a bottle of wine from an excursion to a winery and therefore will not only have a great taste but wonderful memories.
