First Major Wine Tasting Event of the Year Takes Place in a Railroad Museum

The Maryland Winery Association will help Marylanders and wine enthusiasts escape the winter blues by hosting Winter Wine at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore on January 8th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. At first glance, why would one hold a wine tasting in a railroad museum? Perhaps it is because consumers have a romantic notion of railroads and wine. Vineyardists, winemakers, engineers and railroad workers may not share the romantic notion of iron horses and wine, but many that do not work in the industries do.

Kathy and I had a delightful wine tasting experience at the Museu del Ferrocarril de Catalunya, a train museum near Barcelona, Spain earlier this fall. It was quite a treat to amble past a myriad of engines and cars displaying the history of Spanish train transportation. The B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore has one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of trains and railroad artifacts. I recall as a child taking out the train set, especially during the holidays. I remember an engine and cars with B&O decals on them. This also brought back memories of my first wine tastings that were blends of Manischewitz and Vernors Ginger Ale.

The 2015 Winter Wine event begins at 6:00 pm with a Vintage Vidal Reception, followed by the general tasting in the railroad roundhouse from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Vidal Blanc is one of the workhorse white grapes in Maryland. Attendees at this special tasting will have opportunities to taste Vidal wines crafted in many different ways from sparkling to dessert and those in between. Tickets for the Vintage Vidal Reception and the Roundhouse Tasting are $80 per person. Tickets for just the Roundhouse Tasting are $65 per person. You can purchase tickets on the Maryland Winery Association website.

The elegant event, dress to impress, includes hors d’oeuvres and music by Sac Au Lait.

Cheers,
Terry
