The Divining Rod Wines from C. Mondavi & Family

C. Mondavi & Family has just announced their first new wine brand in more than 50 years. The Divining Rod brand is based on Marc Mondavi, winemaker and his intense interest in water witching. Marc Mondavi is third winery generation in the C. Mondavi family and  he is also a water witch.

Currently two Divining Rod wines are available: 2010 Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay and a 2010 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Both wines are distributed around the United States. I haven’t had the opportunity to try either wine but I am looking forward to tasting them at my next opportunity.

According to a press release, Marc Mondavi says, “I have been water witching since I was just a teenager.  It usually catches people a bit off guard the first time they see it, but my track record speaks for itself; I’ve been able to find water where geologists have come up dry.” “I basically grew up in the vineyards learning about viticulture and winemaking.  This new brand is first and foremost a tribute to my winemaking heritage of which I am very proud.  It allows me to leverage all of my practical winemaking skills with a unique talent I have perfected over the years, a talent that some may think is a little more supernatural than normal.”

During June a special sweepstakes is taking place. Visit the new Facebook page, The Divining Rod, to enter a special sweepstakes. Winners will receive a Divining Rod Party Kit.

Water witching has been around for centuries and is a legitimate way to discover where underground water may be located. It saves the expense of drilling for water where there may not be any. While it’s not 100 percent accurate, it can work and save money and time.  I had an uncle who used water witching. Uncle Paul was a farmer and a carpenter. I recall as a young girl, Uncle Paul traveling a couple of hours to reach our small farm. He brought his divining rod with him to try to help my father and brother locate water on our land. I can still recall Uncle Paul noting a particular area where water might be found underground. I was fascinated with the idea and now my interest has been rekindled.

Gruyère Cheese Fondue with Rye Croutons

Gruyère Cheese Fondue with Rye Croutons

Ingredients

Fondue

6 c grated Gruyère cheese, packed
1 T cornstarch
3/4 c Wollersheim Chardonnay
1 T lemon zest
1 t minced garlic
1-3 T Kirsch
1 t ground nutmeg
Rye Croutons (as desired)

Rye Croutons

1 loaf hardy rye bread, unsliced
1/2  lb butter
1 T minced garlic
2 T chopped parsley
1 T minced chives
1 T chopped fresh tarragon
2 T grated fine Gruyère cheese

Directions

Fondue

1. Combine the grated cheese with cornstarch in a large bowl.
2. In a good size sauce pot combine Wollersheim Chardonnay, lemon zest and garlic. Place mixture on stove over high heat. When wine comes to a boil, reduce the heat and whisk in the grated cheese a little at a time. When all of the cheese has been whisked in and mixture is bubbling, whisk in the kirsch and nutmeg.
3. Transfer to a fondue pot with a burner. Dip croutons into mixture and enjoy

Rye Croutons

1. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees. Cut croutons into 1 1/2 inch cubes. Melt butter over medium to low heat with all of the remaining ingredients except the cheese. Place croutons in a large bowl. Pour the melted butter mixture over the croutons and toss together. Toss in the grated cheese. Allow the croutons to soak up the butter and cheese mixture.
2. Place croutons on a sheet pan and spread out so they are not piled on top of each other. Place in oven and bake until golden brown but not dry.

Judgment of Princeton: French and New Jersey Wines

First there was the 1976 Judgment of Paris, last week was the Judgment of Princeton. The results of the Judgment of Paris in 1976 surprised the wine world and variations of the event have taken place. The most recent was in Princeton, New Jersey. Organized by the American Association of Wine Economists, AAWE, it was called “The Judgment of Princeton” and took place June 8, 2012

“The Judgment of Princeton paired selected New Jersey wines with French wines. The nine judges were from Belgium, France and the United States. George Taber who was the only reporter at The Judgment of Paris in 1976 led the Judgment of Princeton event.

Results of The Judgment of Princeton

Karl Korchmann of AAWE writes, “Although, the winner in each category was a French wine (Beaune Clos des Mouches for the whites and Chateau Mouton-Rothschild for the reds) NJ wines barely differed in their average rank from those of France. Three of the top four whites were from New Jersey. The best NJ red was ranked 3rd place. Prices for the NJ wines are typically one-third to one-twentieth of their French competitors.”

White Wines

1 Clos des Mouches Drouhin 2009 FRA
2 Unionville Pheasant Hill Single Vineyard 2010 USA
3 Heritage Chardonnay 2010 USA
4 Silver Decoy “Black  Feather” 2010 USA
5 Puligny Montrachet Domaine Leflaive 2009 FRA
Tied 6 Bellview Chardonnay 2010 USA
Tied 6 Bâtard Montrachet Marc-Antonin Blain 2009 FRA
8 Amalthea Chardonnay 2008 USA
9 Ventimiglia Chardonnay 2010 USA
10 Meursault-Charmes Jean Latour-Labille2008 FRA

Red Wines

1 Ch. Mouton Rothschild 2004 FRA
2 Ch. Haut Brion 2004 FRA
3 Heritage Estate  BDX 2010 USA
4 Ch. Montrose 2004 FRA
5 Tomasello Oak Reserve 2007 USA
6 Ch. Leoville Las Cases 2004 FRA
7 Bellview Lumiere 2010 USA
8 Silver Decoy Cab. Franc 2008 USA
9 Amalthea Europa VI 2008 USA
10 Four JG’s Cab Franc 2008 USA

A statistical evaluation of the judging and results show that for the most part the results were insignificant. The only exceptions were the highest ranked white wine and the lowest ranked red wine.

It was also noted that with most of the wine results being insignificant, the difference in price can be significant. If price is important to consumers they should look at New Jersey wines.

For more detailed information visit the AAWE blog.

While these events are important by bringing attention to lesser known wine regions, it is also important to remember that if you like a wine then it is the wine for you.

Cheers! Kathy

Maryland Wine Week is Happening Now!

If you haven’t already started to participate in Maryland Wine Week, there is still time. Maryland Wine Week ends June 17.

Maryland Wine Week celebrates Maryland wines with a variety of events. Maryland wines are being promoted and enjoyed at many locations including Maryland wineries, wine stores, and restaurants. Numerous special events and special deals are taking place this week.

One of the best ideas is the introduction of Maryland wine to restaurants. This is a great way to inform consumers about Maryland wines that are now being made in many areas of the state. It also reinforces the concept of Drink Local Wine.

Special featured events include:

  • June 14: The Wine Market Hosts Black Ankle Vineyards Wine – For tickets call 410-244-6166
  • June 16: Alexandra’s American Fusion – Black Ankle Wine – Call 410-465-1500 for reservations
  • June 16: Eat•Drink•Go LOCAL North – Tickets available online

More information and events are available online at Maryland Wine Week.

Whatever you do to celebrate Maryland Wine Week, tweet about the wine and experience using hashtags #MDWine and #mdwineweek .
