The Joys of the Vineyard and Winery

Winemakers and wine growers usually decry the romanticism of wine and vineyards. Really they have every right to since they do the massive amount of work to grow and maintain the vineyards and produce the wines. After all it has been said that more than 2,000 decisions must be made for that wonderful wine reaches your glass.

But the joys of the vineyard are not insignificant. From the first burst forth of the buds turning to leaves and bearing white blossoms to the tiny, green global fruits increasing in bulk and through veraison to the fully ripe fruit, the vineyard is a never-ending source of enjoyment and amazement.

Artists also recognize that the country area that contains vineyards, buildings, and wine tastings are a sight to be enhanced and remembered with the paintbrush.

On a recent visit to the delightful Slack Winery at Woodlawn Farm for a book signing of A Wine Journey, we chanced to meet three delightful women who were absorbed with painting the scenes at the estate. Despite a slight chill in the air the weather was wonderful for painting the scene that include buildings, flowering trees and chairs. (If you are wondering why not vineyards, Slack Winery vineyards are about 30 minutes away.)

Even though they were intent on their painting, they stopped to talk about their joy of painting. All three were inspiring but so were the scenes they were painting.

We asked if they had just shown up and had asked about painting the scene, we learned that they had contacted the winery in advance.

If you have a pen or paintbrush in hand consider visiting a winery and vineyard to paint one of the many scenes available.

Spring brings about the awakening of the earth and with that people are out and about hopefully enjoying the sunshine with the promise of good things to come. Wineries and tasting rooms are busy planning events for people to enjoy.

In the US we are lucky that so many wineries are open for drop in visits. There are a few wineries where appointments need to be made. However while attending the International Wine Tourism Conferences (IWINETC) in Europe we have discovered that many wineries in Europe require appointments. Whenever you are planning to visit a winery, check with the winery in advance for hours and whether an appointment or reservation is necessary.

Last week while we were in North Carolina visiting some of the special wineries in the Yadkin Valley, we saw that every winery tasting room had  holiday and Christmas decorations displayed. Visiting a winery at this time of year is a special experience with decorations creating a holiday spirit. Some tasting rooms will even have mulled wine simmering in a crockpot.

Thanksgiving Farm Wines Tasting Room, Maryland

Thanksgiving Farm winery could be the poster child for the Drink Local Wine community. This petite size winery only uses its own vineyard grapes for producing its own wines.

What could be better than to have a bottle of wine gracing your Thanksgiving Day table with a label “Thanksgiving Farm?” Maryland residents are lucky to have a winery named Thanksgiving Farm. The winery is located in Harwood in Anne Arundel County and not far from the District of Columbia.

Visitors to the winery will discover a warm welcome, elegant tasting room and a sparkling white winery. This boutique winery is small but has a small elegant tasting room. Relatively new on the scene Thanksgiving Farm winery is only open on Sundays from 1pm – 5pm.

The owners are producing serious wines. Current wines include Meritage, Farmhouse Red, Dry Rose and a Franc Blanc. All wines are produced from the onsite vineyard.

This Sunday stop by to purchase to taste the Thanksgiving Farm wines and decide what you would like to serve for Thanksgiving.

We were fortunate to be able to purchase about four gallons of Cabernet Sauvignon juice that had not set on the skins. At the moment the juice is quietly fermenting and we plan to bottle it before the Drink Local Conference in 2013.

White wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are unusual and unique. When you are out and traveling about look for these special wines.
