Discovering specific wine aromas and tastes

Two SLO Wines

My California Wine Appellation Specialist course continued this week with the content focusing on the appellations within San Luis Obispo County. For this class I opened a bottle of the 2009 Illuminatus that Kathy and I made with grapes we sourced from Paso Robles. Our first wine for this week was a Grenache from the […]

Wines from Monterey, California

My California Wine Appellation Specialist course continued this week with the content focusing on the appellations within Monterey and San Benito counties. One of the advantages of studying appellations is tasting wines from those particular areas. Prior to this class, I have not tasted a wine from either San Benito or Monterey counties. The 2012 […]

Two Petite Sirahs

There were less restrictions on the wines we had to taste this week for the California Wine Appellation Specialist course at the San Francisco Wine School, so I choose a wine from Livermore AVA and Lodi AVA. Both contained Petite Sirah. Surprisingly, I purchased two of the wines from a local wine store in Elkridge, […]

10th Annual Lake County Wine Adventure

Plan to visit Lake County, California to discover numerous wineries with some wonderful wines especially Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Additional wine varieties to be found in Lake County are: Petite Sirah, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Riesling. Many of the wineries are located near Clear Lake. The views can be awesome so have your camera or cell phone handy. On the last weekend of July the Lake County wineries will celebrate the 10th Annual Lake County Wine Adventure “Wine with Altitude.”

Summer is for Grilling and Perhaps a Watermelon Granité

For the 4th of July or any day this summer plan to grill a special dish for your family and friends. Several recipes that are grilled are available on the Wine Trail Traveler website. Check these recipes depending on the food item you want to grill.

Reflections on Sonoma

This week’s class for the California Wine Appellation Specialist program through the San Francisco Wine School has a focus on Sonoma. We made three trips to wineries in the Sonoma region in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Our first impression of the wineries is their laid back attitude. We did not encounter any snobbish people amongst […]

Steven Spurrier Santa Barbara County Wine Tasting

One of our highlights while in Santa Barbara County was a wine tasting with Steven Spurrier. In the United States wine trade, Spurrier is noted for organizing the 1976 blind wine tasting in Paris where a California Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon scored higher than prestigious producers from Burgundy and Bordeaux. That singular event put California […]

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Wines and “Not Exactly Real” Videos

Bert Merlott is a fictitious character with high snobbish mannerisms that plays in contrast to the “real” of Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines.

CWAS Homework: Napa

I had previously selected the wines to taste for the second week of the California Wine Appellation Specialist program at the San Francisco Wine School when my instructor threw a curve. One of the wines had to be similar to one of the wines I wrote about the previous week from Mendocino County. Since the […]

Reflections on Napa

The focus on this week’s California Wine Appellation Specialist’s class is Napa. I am taking the online version of the class through the San Francisco Wine School. Our wine journey included several trips to wineries in Napa Valley. Many of the winery visits are memorable.  Those include well known wineries as well as hidden gems.  […]
