Adler Fels’ Delicious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Kathy and I received two wines to sample from Adler Fels winery in the Mayacamas Mountains in Sonoma County. Both wines were tasted in varietal specific Riedel stemware.

Occasionally I’ll taste a wine that immediately evokes a memory. That experience occurred with a first taste of the 2014 Adler Fels Pinot Noir. I recognized the taste and was immediately transported back a few years to a wine judging of Santa Barbara wines headed by Steven Spurrier. During that judging we tasted several Pinot Noirs from Santa Barbara County. They were quite good and I enjoyed them. Just a few points separated the Pinots. This Adler Fels Pinot was very reminiscent to the Pinots that I helped judge.

The 2014 Pinot Noir retails for $27.99. Seventy-six percent of the grapes were sourced from Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County while 24% of the grapes were sourced from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. The wine had a translucent dark ruby color and emphasized fruit on the aroma and taste. The most notable fruit was raspberry. Also on the taste were hints of vanilla, baking spices and blackberries. The medium-bodied wine also had medium tannins. It had a fruity finish. The wine had 14.4% alcohol. This is a very  quaffable Pinot Noir that was delicious with a ham dinner.

One other memory associated with this Pinot was cool temperatures. Pinot likes cool nights. While in Lompoc at the beginning of July, I noticed that by 5:00 in the afternoon, the pools were empty. It had cooled off by late afternoon, a weather condition that favors Pinot Noir.

The second wine sampled from Adler Fels was a 2015 Chardonnay that retails for $19.99. The intense aroma meets the senses before the face encounters the glass. The light gold colored wine was crafted with grapes sourced equally from Russian River Valley and Monterey County. Apple, pear and peach were noted on the aroma. The taste was predominantly apple. The silky mouthfeel was accompanied by a full-body. The finish was multi-layered. First the finish had apple notes followed by a hint of peach and ending with chalk. The wine was a 14.4% alcohol. The Chardonnay was delicious and paired well with perch and rice. I used a bit of the wine with the rice mixture I composed.

Both of these wines give consumers a taste of California with reasonable prices. Winemaker Aaron Bader crafted the Pinot Noir, and winemaker Linda Trotta fashioned the Chardonnay.

Cheers,
Terry

Purple Heart Wine a Must Find

William (Bill) A. Wroolie, Rep. Mike Thompson D-CA, Raymond Coursen and Stephen L. Ruckman

From the podium in room 2075 of the Rayburn House Office Building, Representative Mike Thompson D-CA said, “What’s better than Veterans and wine?” This was a very fitting statement for the introduction of the 2014 vintage of Purple Heart Red. Purple Heart Wine produces a red wine to help honor American military heroes. The brand was started by C. Mondavi & Family in March 2016. Mr. Thompson signed two magnum bottles of the wine and introduced William (Bill) A. Wroolie and Stephen L. Ruckman of the Purple Heart Foundation and Elyse winery owner and winemaker Raymond Coursen who along with winemaker David Grega helped craft the Purple Heart wine. The large signed bottles of wine were given to Bill and Stephen.

Purple Heart label design

Kathy and I arrived at the Rayburn House Building a bit early which gave us time to discover some things about the wine and the Purple Heart Foundation. In past winery visits, we have met veteran owners and/or winemakers that told us they attempted to put an image of a medal they received on one of their wine bottle labels. The TTB did not accept the label. I was interested in what Purple Heart Wine did. Jaki Palacious, Brand Manager from C. Mondavi & Family, explained that the wine’s label is not an image of the actual Purple Heart medal, which has a gold heart shaped enclosing a bust of George Washington on a purple background. Instead, the wine label shows an image of five gold stars (representing the five military branches) atop a purple-colored heart. A gold leaf design is at the top of the heart and its sides. The design was created in cooperation with the Purple Heart Foundation.

Ray Coursen, winemaker

Winemaker and Vietnam veteran Ray Coursen spoke about his philosophy of winemaking. He looks at winemaking “as cooking without a flame.” Ray spoke to the assembled and mentioned that he returned from Vietnam 47 years ago. He has been a winemaker in Napa Valley for over three decades. This brand of wine is near and dear to Ray’s heart.

The first vintage of the Purple Heart wine was a 2013 vintage that had 7,500 cases made. The 2014 vintage had a production of 15,000 cases. It may be hard to find on the East Coast since most of the allotment for this part of the country went to the White House. The 2014 Purple Heart Red Wine was a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petite Sirah and 1% Petit Verdot. Ray mentioned to me that it doesn’t take much Petit Verdot to influence a wine. The Merlot was mostly sourced from the Yountville area of Napa Valley. The wine was an opaque dark purple color with a ruby hue and ruby rim. The aroma emphasized dark fruits. The taste reminded me of blackberries, blue berries and cassis. (I had a 100% cassis wine while in France, and since, have been able to pick out this trait in wines that have it.) The wine had a medium to full body with medium tannins. The finish was fruity with the fruit yielding to leather and a bit of licorice. The wine is 14.2% alcohol. The wine was delicious, but perhaps the best is the retail price of $19.99. At this price point, if you have a chance to pick up this wine do so.

Cheers,
Terry

2014 Purple Heart Wine Introduced

Ray Coursen, winemaker and Purple Heart veteran

This week we traveled to Washington DC to attend the Purple Heart wine event. The event was sponsored by the Purple Heart organization, the Congressional Wine Caucus and the Military Veterans Caucus. Purple Heart Wines is a proprietary label. The presentation of the 2014 Purple Heart wine was very enjoyable with this special wine, food and gentle conversations. We found 2014 Purple Heart wine to be dry, smooth and delicious.

The back label of the 2014 Purple Heart wine notes, “The Purple Heart Medal – no honor better symbolizes the bravery, determination and selflessness of the military men and women serving our country.”

Rep. Mike Thompson signs Purple Heart magnum

Purple Heart wines was started in 2016 by C. Mondavi & Family. Peter Mondavi was also a veteran from WWII. The winery worked with two winemakers who were also veterans of the Vietnam War and Iraq. Ray Coursen noted that it was 47 years ago this week that he returned from Vietnam. The purpose of the Purple Heart wines is to help increase the fundraising and awareness of the Purple Heart organization.

On Wednesday, the occasion was held in the banquet room of the Rayburn Building close to our nation’s Capitol. Arriving early, we had the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the room which had numerous photos of Americana images

including a lighthouse, an aging barn, a farmhouse, and a small boat. Small bistro tables were draped with off-white tablecloths that wrapped around the tablecloths, giving off an elegance of sophistication. Each table was accented with purple and white flower bouquets.

We learned that one of the purposes behind the development of the Purple Heart wine was to help our veterans who have done so much for our country. The first Purple Heart wine was the 2013 Purple Heart which was produced with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This wine had 7,500 cases made. The wine retailed for $19.99 and since its release has sold out.

The 2014 Purple Heart Red Wine was produced with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot.

2014 Purple Heart Wine

Attending the Purple Heart wine event were Ray Coursen, winemaker and leaders of the Purple Heart Foundation. William Wroolie, is the Purple Heart Foundation, Chairman of the Board and Stephen Ruckman, CPA MBA is the Chief Executive Officer. Of course, Rep. Mike Thompson was in attendance for a brief time and introduction. All three have received the Purple Heart medal. Rep. Thompson also signed two magnum bottles of the 2014 Purple Heart wine. Unfortunately he needed to leave quickly for a vote on the House floor.

It is interesting to note that Rep. Thompson’s Congressional district includes the renowned wine region, Napa. He is also the force behind starting the Congressional Wine Caucus in 1999.

The Food

A delightful assortment of food trays accompanied the glasses of the 2014 Purple Heart wine. Guests were able to enjoy a variety of small food bites through the evening. The assortment included 3 types of cheeses, charcuterie, crackers, pickles, and olives. During the event additional food trays were passed with fried seafood balls, lamb chops, bacon wrapped and bacon-wrapped hors d’ oeuvres.

About the Purple Heart Foundation

Purple Heart Foundation is the fundraising part of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation (MOPH). “The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families.”

The National Headquarters for the MOPH is in Virginia. Hundred of chapters around the country are included as part of their efforts to support all veterans. The MOPH offers help to veterans through several programs including: The Service Program, The VAVS Program, The Americanism Program, The National Scholarship Program, The Purple Heart Trail Program and the ROTC/JROTC/Youth Programs.

Thank you to the brave veterans of the United States, to the Purple Heart organization that seeks to helps all veteran, to Ray Coursen (Purple Heart veteran and winemaker) and to the Peter Mondavi Sr. Family.

Cheers!

Cocktail Recipes with Infused Spirits

Garofalo Artisan Liqueurs in Winchester, VA

Last year we visited wineries and distilleries in Virginia’s Shenandoah region. One of those is the unique Garofalo Artisan Liqueurs which is producing several yummy liqueurs. They have a very unique story which dates back to the  founder’s grandmother who made liqueurs and wine during Prohibition. Francesca Inzero developed a Walnut Liqueur  which her grandson Dick Garofalo began to replicate and offer for sale. Dick expanded the variety of infused spirits. Unfortunately Dick passed away in 2016 and at the time of our visit his business partner Dana Norris was seeking to increase production and distribution. For more information read the Wine Trail Traveler article.

We were happy to receive permission to add their delicious cocktail recipes to the Wine Trail Traveler distilling section of our website. Check out the recipes below as well as the recipes already added to Wine Trail Traveler distilling site.

Fishing, Wine and Etsy

“Nearshore Adventures”

This week we spent a great several days with my brother-in-law and his wife. Todd and Sheryl are passionate about the fishing industry in the Michigan region. As avid fishermen, they wrote a book, Nearshore Adventures. Terry worked with them to get the book submitted for publication both as a paperback and an ebook. Over several days and many, many hours later, the mission was accomplished. The book Nearshore Adventures is now available as a pdf in their Etsy shop called TssullyTackleBox. The book will soon be available as a paperback and an ebook. Todd and Sheryl are also very creative and are making their own fishing lures which are also available in their Etsy shop. From my perspective, they have a large inventory of fishing lures available in their shop.

Throughout the three days, we had good times and there was much laughter as Terry and I learned so much about fishing and about Todd and Sheryl’s adventures while on the lakes. When the weather is appropriate they also try ice fishing. We are encouraging Todd and Sheryl to write more books about fishing.

“A Wine Lexicon: Increasing Your Knowledge”

Along the way through our extensive conversations, we learned more about selling online especially selling on Etsy. While Terry and I had talked about putting our wine-related products on Etsy, we had hesitated. So with Todd and Sheryl’s enthusiasm behind us, Wine Trail Traveler now has an Etsy shop known as WineBooksandMore. When you check WineBooksandMore out you will see our newest self-published book A Wine Lexicon: Increasing Your Knowledge. Our earlier self-published, wine-related books are also available in our Etsy shop as well as kitchen towels with wine-related embroidery. We hope to add more to our Etsy shop inventory soon. Check out WineBooksandMore out and let us know what you think.

Virginia’s 2017 Governor’s Cup Awards

Andrew Fialdini at The Barns at Hamilton Station

Each year Virginia celebrates its large and growing wine industry by selecting  the Governor’s Cup award winning wines. Recently announced were the 2017 Virginia’s Governors’s Cup Awards. The top award went to The Barns at Hamilton Station Vineyards for their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon.

The judging panel consists of 45 judges. As would normally be expected, in the blind tasting the wines were judged according to their appearance, aroma and flavor. In addition each wine was judged for the overall quality and commercial suitability. The judging consisted of two rounds. The preliminary round took place over 10 days. Six judges tasted each wine. The final round took place over three days and 15 judges chose the wines that were selected from the preliminaries.

According to the Virginia Wine website, “The 12 wines with the highest average score are identified as the ‘Governor’s Cup Case.’ The wine with the highest overall score is the Governor’s Cup Winner.” The 2017 winner was the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon from The Barns at Hamilton Station.

Visit The Barns at Hamilton Station, VA

According to a recent press release, at a special VWA’s Governor’s Cup Gala, Andrew Fialdini owner of The Barns at Hamilton Station said, “We are honored to be among the Virginia wineries who have won the Governor’s Cup in previous years. After years in government service, my wife and I were looking to start a second career where we could work the land. This experience has surpassed all our expectations. We are very proud of this Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 vintage was a special one and we knew we wanted to develop a wine that was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with the fruit from this vintage.”

Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded. For 2017 the Gold Medal winners were: Breaux Vineyards, Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery, CrossKeys Vineyards, Horton Vineyards, Ingleside Vineyards, Jefferson Vineyards, King Family Vineyard, Michael Shaps Wineworks, Pollak Vineyards, Sunset Hills Vineyard, The Barns at Hamilton Station Vineyards, Upper Shirley Vineyards, Valley Road Vineyards and Veritas Winery.

We visited The Barns at Hamilton Station and wrote an extensive article with photos about the delightful story behind the winery. With a history and a story along with winning this top wine award, the winery will undoubtedly be in the news more.

Congratulations to all of the Virginia wineries who participated in the 2017 competition!

Cheers!
