Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut

Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut

On Saturday, October 15, the Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards’ Glorious Bites final challenge will take place between three semi-finalists. The contestants are vying for a $5,000 prize. The contestants were chosen at three regional semi-finals. We wrote about the Washington, DC semi-final where we had fun interviewing Jerry Edwards from Timonium, MD, who won.

Plan now to attend this final Glorious Bites Challenge taking place at the Gloria Ferrer winery in Sonoma this Saturday. This is sure to be an enjoyable event. Attendees will be able to enjoy appetizers, wine and a cooking demonstration by Executive Chef Jennifer Luttrell. Tickets for the final judging are available online.

The three semi-finalists are Diane Williams who’s special appetizer is Triple “B” Won Tons Beef, Blue Cheese, & Bacon, Chera Little who is competing with Miso-Maple Glazed Cod Wonton-Cho’s with Crispy Bok Choy Slaw and Jerry Edwards competing with Lobster and Brie Dogs.

The purpose of the Glorious Bites Challenge was to find yummy appetizers that would pair with the Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut. Appetizers were also judged according to taste and appearance. The judges, who we watched judging the appetizers in Washington, DC, were serious and intense in their concentration while judging each appetizer.

The judges for this final event include Christopher Sawyer – a sommelier and founder of SawyerSomm.com, Sara Deseran – a food writer and editor for San Francisco magazine. The event will be emceed by Leslie Sbrocco, who is an author, wine consultant and television host.

Gloria Ferrer in Sonoma, California has spent an immense amount of time and effort in the Glorious Bites Challenge.

Spyglass Ridge

In anticipation of the holidays, several wine trails are hosting special holiday events. One such wine trail is the Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail.

The Heartland Christmas event features cookies. Remember those good, old days when the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and vanilla filled the house? Perhaps you were arriving home from school or work and  walking into the kitchen grabbing a cookie warm off the cookie sheet and a glass of milk.

In the celebration of homemade cookies, the members of the  Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail will celebrate with recipes and cookie cutters. At the first winery, participants will receive a grapevine wreath and wine glass plus a cookie cutter and a recipe.

Heartland Christmas Cookie Event Dates

The cookie event takes place on three weekends and includes November 19-20, November 27-28 and December 3-4.

Tickets are a reasonable $15 and may be purchased at participating wineries or online. Note that the tickets are good for all three weekends.

While picking up your cookie cutters and recipes, check out and taste the wines. You may want to purchase wines that you want to serve with your holiday meals. Plan to spend some time in your kitchen baking some of these “sure to be good” cookies!

Wineries participating in the Holiday Cookie event include:

Shenandoah Spirits Trail Launched

92016adsc_3261Thursday, September 29 was the grand launch of the Shenandoah Spirits Trail. The announcement in Woodstock, Virginia took place at the Woodstock Brew House. In addition to media presence, wineries, cideries, distilleries and breweries were represented. Also in attendance were two local Virginia politicians who spoke of the importance of the trail to the community.

According to the moderator Jenna French, the initiative for this unique trail was the collaboration of several area tourism specialists who were seeking to tie together the wineries, cideries, breweries and distilleries in the region. It was noted the importance of the beverages industry in promoting tourism, and thus increasing the economy of the region. The associations working to create the Shenandoah Spirits Trail included: Harrisonburg Tourism and Visitor Services, Rockingham County Economic Development and Tourism, Shenandoah County Tourism, and Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Woodstock Brew House

Woodstock Brew House, Virginia

The Woodstock Brew House was an ideal location to hold the announcement. Karl Roulston, one of the owners, spoke about this location as a gathering spot for people. The large room was filled with numerous tables and seating. A large area overlooks numerous stainless steel tanks. At the back of the facility, a counter was available where one can order from a long list of artisan craft beers.

The Shenandoah Spirits Trail offers an unusual trail map; it is a fold-up pocket map. The facilities noted on the map range from slightly northeast towards the southwest. The farthest north participating facility is a cidery, Winchester Ciderworks. Reaching south the farthest is the new winery, Marceline Vineyards. The trail begins near Winchester, Virginia and continues down to a short distance south of Harrisonburg.

National and International Coffee Days

92916img_1016Today September 29 is National Coffee Day according to some sources. However according to the International Coffee Organization (ICO) , Saturday, October 1 is International Coffee Day.

If you enjoy your daily quota of hot coffee, consider trying this unusual liqueur we discovered produced in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We were visiting Garofalo Artisan Liqueurs this week when we had the opportunity to taste this unique coffee bean flavored liqueur.

The “Night Life” Coffee Liqueur was a translucent brown color. The taste was smooth with an aroma and taste of cacao and coffee. Coffee drinkers are likely to discover this as a delightful drink which won the Bronze medal from the American Distilling Institute at the 10th Annual Judging of Craft Spirits.

Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards: Glorious Bites Contest

Lobster and Brie Dos Wins Semi-Final

Lobster and Brie Dos Wins Semi-Final

Over the past weeks, Gloria Ferrer has sponsored a special contest for food lovers and wine lovers. Participants who participated were to create an appetizer that paired with Gloria Ferrer’s Sonoma Brut, a delicious, yummy mouth exploding sparkling wine produced in the traditional champagne method.

We were pleased to be invited to the semi-final event taking place in Washington DC at one of the Union Kitchen facilities. We will be writing a whole lot more about the experience but check out these photos from last Thursday.

Maryland Chef Wins the Washington DC Semi-final of Gloria Ferrer’s Glorious Bites Challenge

Jerry Edwards of Timonium, Maryland bested five other semi-finalists from the region, after creating an appetizer to pair with a Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut. Jerry will move on to the finals in October at Gloria Ferrer in Sonoma, California. His appetizer, Lobster and Brie Dogs, will square off against two other semi-finalists, one from the Los Angeles, California semi-final and one from the Austin, Texas semi-final.

This is the second year Gloria Ferrer put on the Glorious Bites Challenge. They had over 1,800 appetizer entries from 44 states. Only 18 people were invited to the semi-finals in three locations. These winners will compete at Gloria Ferrer for the $5,000 prize. Jerry is one step closer to the cash after impressing the four judges last night at Union Kitchen off New York Avenue in Washington DC. The six chefs drew corks with numbers 1 and 2 written on the corks. The three that had the number 1 collected their ingredients and spread out at three cooking stations. A time was set and the chefs started creating their master pieces. They had 30 minutes to cook and assemble the dish they hoped would impress the judges.

At times, the kitchen area reminded me of some of the challenges in the tv series “Hell’s Kitchen.” The chefs had to face the challenges of cooking in a kitchen they were not use to, and the media people and well wishers who were taking photo after photo while they were working. This attention did not bother another chef, Ronna Farley of Rockville, Maryland. After the competition, Ronna said, “I had a ball.”

When the short 30 minutes were up, plates with the appetizers were delivered to the judges who set to the task of scoring each appetizer. The paparazzi-like photographers in the room swarmed around the appetizers that were placed on a table in front of the kitchen area. The four judges did take a break while the second group of three chefs created their appetizers. In the end, after a drum roll, the winner was announced and Jerry’s smile was infectious.

We caught up with Jerry earlier during the evening. We asked how he tackled creating an appetizer that would pair with the Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut. Jerry stated, “The wine is already made.” So his plan was to create an appetizer that would compare and contrast with the sparkling wine. The green apple in his recipe compared with the brut while the richness of the brie contrasted with the wine. Jerry is a professional chef. He owns his own catering company, Chef Expressions in Lutherville, Maryland.

The six chefs who competed at Union Kitchen represented only one percent of the chefs throughout the country that entered the competition. These semi-finalists included:

Josee Lanzi of Newport Ritchie, Florida

Becky Ellis of Roanoke, Virginia

We wish Jerry continued success when he travels to Sonoma to compete in the finals.

Terry
