Spend Father’s Day with Your Dad at a Winery!

Make this Father’s Day special. Numerous wineries allow visitors to stop by with picnic baskets to enjoy on their property. Always call in advance to check and remember to purchase any wine at the winery, as outside alcohol is not permitted at wineries.

Some wineries have an assortment of gourmet foods including cheese, crackers and sausage so you can purchase your picnic goods while in the tasting room. Contact wineries in advance for details about Father’s Day events.

Cheers! Kathy

Most Beautiful Wine Region in the World

A question was posted on Twitter by enoturisme asking, “So what is the absolute coolest, most beautiful wine tourism destination in the world?” This is a difficult question to answer without criteria to define beautiful. However a destination did immediately come to mind: the Grand Valley area of Colorado along Interstate 70. The Book Cliffs provide the background for stunning views from vineyards. The stone earthy colors contrast with the greens of the vineyards. There is a certain enchantment in this region. One wants to sit in the vineyards and just stare out over the rows of vines to the scenery beyond. The backdrop changes as the position of the sun differs throughout the day.

Another advantage of this region is that there are several wineries one can visit with these stunning views. Some of the wineries are close enough to enjoy biking between them. A few, in Palisade, are close enough to walk. As an added bonus, the Grand Mesa is to the south and east. Although not as stunning as the Book Cliffs, it too has its beauty.

The Wine Country Inn is situated amongst vineyards and wineries. This is a perfect base to explore the region.

I’ve taken several photographs of this area. One of my favorites was taken from the Wine Country Inn in Palisade. Clouds cast shadows on the sun drenched earthy colors of the Book Cliffs as vibrant greens of vineyards provide contrast to the earth tones, cloud whites and blue sky.

What comes to mind first when you think of the coolest, most beautiful wine tourism destination in the world?

Cheers,
Terry

Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival near Harpers Ferry!

If you have a free day this weekend June 11-12, consider attending the 40th Annual Spring Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival located a few miles from historic Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. In addition to music, arts & crafts, and food, visitors have the opportunity to taste wines from seven West Virginia wineries. Music is also a part of the festival.

This is a great event with numerous fine artists and arts & crafts vendors portraying their talents. While Terry went and talked with the winery staff at the wine tasting tents, I decided to scout out the vendors. The tents of vendors went on and on. If you shop throughout the year for Christmas and other gifts, this is a great event to attend.

The festival management has done great work in setting up the displays. Wineries are together in one area while nearby the arrangement of craft vendors makes it easy to browse and enjoy the many offerings. Wineries include Watts Roost Winery, Kenco Farms, Winery, Forks of Cheat Winery, West Whitehill Winery, Lambert’s Vintage Wines, Kirkwood Winery and Potomac Highland Winery.

This is the most reasonable price for an event of this size that we have seen. Tickets are seven dollars and a one dollar coupon is available online. Check out the Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival website and try to attend if you can.

This event is family friendly!

Cheers!

Merlot 2008 from South Coast

We opened a bottle of 33° N Merlot Estate 2008 wine produced by Fallbrook Winery in Fallbrook, California. This estate grown Merlot was from the Gracie Hill Vineyard 2008 harvest. Produced by Fallbrook Winery in Southern California, this opaque dark purple with a ruby rim wine was full bodied and offered nuances of black cherry. Other dark fruits such as blackberries and black currants lurked in the background. The finish was fruity with medium tannins. The fruit yielded to spices such as cinnamon. Although one can enjoy the wine by itself, we also paired it with grilled hamburgers. The grilled meat and wine matched well.

Fallbrook Winery is in the South Coast region of California. The winery has two lines of wine. The 33° N line was chosen because the winery and vineyards are located on the 33rd parallel. The winery is one of the largest wineries in Southern California.

We had an opportunity to visit Fallbrook Winery last year. Read an article we wrote about Fallbrook Winery here. Anyone planning to visit the Fallbrook Winery should contact the winery for an appointment. Keep a camera handy for delightful photos of the vineyards and the aging cellars.

A Murder Mystery with Gourmet Dinner this Weekend in Mendocino

Numerous wineries offer special events including murder mystery dinners. An expansion of the murder mystery dinner idea is taking place this weekend, June 10 and June 11 at Parducci Winery in Ukiah, California.

This unusual event is titled  “Goes Well with Murder” presented by Murder Mystery Mendocino. “Mingle with fellow guests and meet an array of colorful suspects. Investigate the Parducci grounds to uncover clues as you embark on a mission to unmask the identity of the killer,” according to the Parducci website.

Tickets are $75 a piece and include a gourmet dinner created by Tamara Frey. Proceeds will benefit the South Ukiah Rotary and Ukiah Players Theatre. For tickets contact Ukiah Players Theater box office at 462-9226.

“Goes Well with Murder” is written and directed by Keith Aisner. In The Ukiah Daily Journal an article by Carole Brodsky in “Mystery, Murder and Merlot” quotes Keith Aisner. “This is a complete antithesis to the Netflix world of canned entertainment. Not only do you get to eat and drink incredible food, but you also get to compete. Each guest table will be its own private fiefdom.”

Mendocino County in northern California is home to numerous wineries, many of which are environmentally friendly both in the winery and the vineyards. Mendocino County wineries are great to visit and taste wines. For articles about several wineries in Mendocino, visit the Wine Trail Traveler review section.
