Virtual Winery Visits

Wine Trail Traveler is expanding their current website with the addition of Virtual Visits.

Golan Heights Winery, Israel

With so many wineries and vineyards in the world and more wineries opening as much as we would like to we cannot possibly visit all of them. There are just so many wineries we would like to explore and learn about. So, we have started adding wineries to Wine Trail Traveler website under the category Virtual Visits.

These winery articles are based on phone and online interviews. Photos of each winery are provided by the individual winery.

Currently we have three virtual visit winery articles: Halter Ranch, Colterris Wines and Golan Heights. Our latest virtual winery article is Golan Heights Winery in Israel. Check out our article at http://winetrailtraveler.com/virtualvisit/golanheights.php.

Chris Pearmund’s Wine Journey

Yesterday we wrote that we will be at Pearmund Cellars in Northern Virginia on Saturday (December 15) afternoon for a book signing event. It seems appropriate that using an excerpt from our book, A Wine Journey, to let you know a little about Chris Pearmund, a well known winemaker and winery consultant.

We first met Chris Pearmund at his winery, Pearmund Cellars, in Broad Run, Virginia, during the middle of January 2007. It did not take long to see that Chris is a visionary as well as a mover and shaker of the wine industry. He started Pearmund Cellars and was instrumental in starting the Winery at LaGrange and Vint Hill Craft Winery in Virginia. His reach extends beyond the Virginia border; he also helped Horizon Cellars start in North Carolina. Chris is friendly, and we later learned that he has a propensity for fun. This was clearly seen in his stuffed animals adorning barrels in the barrel room at Pearmund Cellars.

Chris’ wine journey began earlier in life. He commented that he had the best mother in the world, but she found cooking a challenge. Chris learned to cook as a preteen, then went to cooking school, worked in kitchens and then discovered wine. He noticed that, in many ways, wine makes food better. Chris realized that people have a concept of preparing food and what is done in the kitchen. However, when it comes to wine, many do not know what has to be done in a vineyard and a winery to make that wine in their bottle.

Wine journeys are not a static event. They are dynamic, and once they begin, they continue. Chris said his journey continues, for example, “at the London Wine Trade Fair, with 40,000 wines to try in three days, I was still like a kid in a candy store. At these types of tastings, focus is important. Sparkling wine for a few hours, visit wines of Greece for awhile, then the different crus of Beaujolais. It’s a big wine world, constantly changing, and I’m still thirsty for more.” Chris was a wine steward at Clyde’s Restaurant group during the 1980s. It was during those years that he entertained the possibility of becoming a winemaker and owning a winery.

Chris spent almost two decades in the wine industry. In addition to being a wine steward, he worked in retail, wholesale, import, wineries and in education, first as a student and then as a teacher. When you are on your wine journey, there are those moments in life that you remember. For Chris, there was an evening of pizza and a 1980 Chateaux Margaux, and later a 1961 Chateaux Margaux he shared with his Dad. Those were events that changed his journey and put him on the path to becoming owner and winemaker at Pearmund Cellars.

Hope to see you at Pearmund Cellars on Saturday.

Cheers! Kathy

Book Signings

This past week we did several individual book signings and are gearing up for a three hour book signing event on Saturday, December 15th, at Pearmund Cellars in Broad Run, Virginia. Book signings are a new experience for Kathy and me. People do like to have their books signed. Probably we are most careful about the spelling of names.

Book signings carry a different mystique than celebrity autographs. There is the personal connection between the book, author and reader that transcends an autograph. So far I have found it much easier to sign books for people I know. You can write something personal. I still try to write something personal for those people that I just met, it’s just a little more difficult.

Like autographs, we discovered that some people have a collection of signed books. They enjoy meeting authors and having a book signed. After reading, the book is added to their growing collection. We have several signed books in our house by different authors; however, they are not all in the same place. This may be something for us to think about.

If you live in the Northern Virginia area, visit Pearmund Cellars on Saturday afternoon. Kathy and I will be on site to greet you. Visiting a winery in December can be an alternative to busy mall shopping. You can pick up some wine for the Holidays and gifts and purchase a signed book.

For information about the book A Wine Journey, visit the book’s website.

Cheers,
Terry

Wine Events for this Weekend December 7th-9th

Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery

Last week while we were in North Carolina visiting some of the special wineries in the Yadkin Valley, we saw that every winery tasting room had  holiday and Christmas decorations displayed. Visiting a winery at this time of year is a special experience with decorations creating a holiday spirit. Some tasting rooms will even have mulled wine simmering in a crockpot.

Take time from your shopping to visit a tasting room or continue shopping by planning to give a gift of wine.

Cheers! Kathy

Gift Basket Ideas for Christmas and the Holidays

Christmas at Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, Ohio

This holiday season why not create gift baskets? Creative gift baskets can be geared toward specific interests. Below are some gift basket ideas. Be sure to add a bottle or two of wine. Not sure what type of wine they like then add a bottle of white and a bottle of red wine. For the “fussy” a gift certificate for wine may be a better idea.

Whatever types of baskets you choose to create, we hope you will add a copy of our recently published book, A Wine Journey. The book is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Powell’s Books and Books-A-Million.

Mulled Wine Jelly: A Holiday Recipe

Brushy Mountain Winery, NC

The recipe for Mulled Wine Jelly was provided to us on our visit to Brushy Mountain Winery in Elkin, North Carolina. A jar of this jelly can be a great holiday gift. The winery is an urban winery located in what was once the Elkin Canning Company, an old cannery building used for canning blackberries. Visitors will enjoy stopping by the tasting room. Be sure to check out some of the unusual names for wines and find out the history behind the names.

Cheers, Kathy

Mulled Wine Jelly

Ingredients

1 bottle Brushy Mountain red wine, your choice
4 c sugar
½ c fresh lemon juice
1 bag mulling spices (purchased or your own blend in a cotton cloth)
1 box powdered pectin
6 jars and lids (8oz.) washed and sterilized and kept hot

Directions

  1. Combine wine, juice, spices and pectin in a large non-reactive pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon over medium high heat.
  3. Add sugar and return to a rolling boil and boil hard for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Set off heat and gently skim off the foam that has formed at the top.
  5. Ladle into hot, sterilized jars, leaving ½” space at the top.
  6. Add lids and tighten rims according to the manufacturers instructions (not too tight!)
  7. Process in the large sterilizing pot if you wish, following instructions for processing jelly with the box of pectin.
  8. Handle carefully so that the seal doesn’t break.

Makes great gifts for Christmas.

Servings suggestions: Serve with some really good crackers and cream cheese. Easy and delicious for a quick appetizer. This is also good as a sauce with pork or lamb melted with additional wine and some finely chopped shallots.

Hanover Park Vineyard Sautéed Scallops Recipe

This week while visiting wineries in North Carolina, we met Amy and Michael Helton, owners of Hanover Park Vineyard. They are professional artists and teachers.  After a long honeymoon in France, they decided to start their own winery. The Hanover Park Vineyard is located in an 1897 farmhouse. Amy enjoys cooking and has created numerous recipes. She easily cooks for two or crowds. Check out one of Amy’s recipes below.

Sautéed Scallops

Enjoy with your favorite rice dish and steamed broccoli with garlic and oil.

  1. Sauté ½ a chopped onion in 3 teaspoons of olive oil over a medium heat for 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add 1 chopped clove of garlic and 8 sliced mushrooms, continue to cook for 5 more minutes.
  3. Add ¼ cup Viognier and let reduce down a few minutes.
  4. Turn heat up to medium high and add 6 large scallops which have been washed and dried into pan.

Cook 3 to 4 minutes, turning once.

Northern Italy Wine Tour

Interested in Italian wines? Interested in great people that also enjoy wine? Then consider a trip to Northern Italy with fellow wine enthusiasts. The trip was organized by Theresa Beaver,Viticulture and Enology Certificate Coordinator Washington State University. The trip takes place during March 17th – 29th, 2013. The trip will cover wineries in the Piedmonte, Tuscany and Veneto. There are only four spots left.

Kathy and I would love to attend another wine trek with this group; however, at the same time we will be next door in Zagreb, Croatia presenting at the 5th International Wine Tourism Conference. We went to New Zealand with Theresa in 2010, and met many new friends. We enjoyed the focus on wineries and wine. Italy is a wonderful wine country. The different regions are unique and often have their own varietal grapes. In addition to the wines the food is great.

For more information check out the trip site.

Cheers,
Terry
