A Visit to New York and Canadian Wineries

For a week we traveled through the Chautauqua area of New York and the Niagara area of Ontario. We stopped at four wineries on the Chautauqua Wine Trail including Liberty Vineyards and Winery, Willow Creek Winery, Woodbury Vineyards and Merritt Estate Winery.

Continuing on our journey we passed through Buffalo into the prolific wine region, Niagara-on-the-Lake. Our first stop was Colaneri Estate Winery, a family owned and operated vineyard and winery. Visitors to Colaneri can enjoy the wine tasting experience and the architecture of the winery and tasting room. The facility reminds one of an old Italian village. Other wineries we visited were delightful and each one offered a different story.

In addition to the Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries, Ontario has several other wine regions. On our travels this month we visited wineries the Niagara Escarpment & Twenty Valley that includes the Beamsville, St. Catharines, St. Davids and Vineland areas.

On our return trip through New York, we stopped at 21 Brix Winery, Johnson Estate Winery and Noble Winery. Then we discovered a surprising winery – Sensory Winery. This winery tasting room is a combination art gallery and wine tasting room. The owner/winemaker works with artists to produce wine blends that change just as the art in the gallery. The artist creates the wine bottle labels. For approximately four months the artist displays his creative art. Visitors can taste wine and browse the art displays. As far as the special blended wines, according to our tasting guide “when it’s sold out it’s gone.” Certainly this is a creative and unusual one of a kind winery tasting rooms.

We visited many wineries and will post our articles about the winery experiences as quickly and efficiently as possible. Keep watching our Winery Reviews section.

Bruschetta with Black Mission Figs and Gorgonzola

Serves 4 to 6

Ingredients

1½ c dry red wine (Merlot)
8 oz dried Black Mission figs, stemmed & halved
1 bay leaf
¼ tsp anise seed
1 loaf country style bread, cut into ½ inch-thick slices
½ c crumbled Gorgonzola
2 T chopped flat leaf parsley

Directions

1. Combine the wine, figs, bay leaf, and anise seed in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 10 minutes, until the figs are rehydrated and soft.

2. Remove from the heat and let cool. Remove the bay leaf, transfer to a food processor, and purée. At this point you can store the mixture in an airtight container, refrigerated, for up to one month.

3. Preheat the broiler. Put the bread slices on a baking sheet and place under the broiler for 2 minutes per side, until golden brown.

4. Spread a thin layer of the fig purée over the bread slices.

5. Crumble the Gorgonzola and spread equal amounts atop the fig purée on each bruschetta.

6. Place under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes, until the cheese begins to melt.

7. Cut each slice into 3 pieces on the diagonal, sprinkle with the parsley, and serve.

Let’s Enjoy Wine on Tap!

One of the Italian nuances we enjoyed while visiting Italy was the “house” wine. Diners could easily order a house wine by the pitcher and the wine was usually good.

On two of our last evenings in Italy after the 2012 International Wine Tourism Conference, we ate at a small Italian restaurant that was frequented by the locals. The first night we ordered a bottle of Italian wine that was fine but the second night we ordered the “house” wine and discovered it to be even better.

Since the first time we visited Italy, I’ve always asked why don’t restaurants in the United States offer “house” wines by the pitcher. I may not have an answer to that question but a company has come up with help for restaurants who want to do this.

Micro Matic can now supply the necessary equipment to restaurants for wine on tap. Wine on tap is a win-win situation for winemakers, restaurants, consumers and the environment.

Restaurant owners need not worry about opening a bottle of wine and selling only one glass of it before it becomes oxidized. Consumers and winemakers can be assured that each glass of wine will be similar. Wine on tap decreases the need of the production of bottles, corks and assorted tops and many wine bottle labels.

For me when choosing a restaurant I may just decide to base it on whether they have wine on tap.

For more information, visit Micro Matic website.

“First Press of the Season” Celebration at Distillery Lane Ciderworks

This Labor Day weekend, Distillery Lane Ciderworks, is hosting its “First Press of the Season” event on Saturday from 10am until 6pm and is for the whole family to enjoy. In addition to scheduled events, visitors can enjoy live music, apple pressing demonstrations and food from South Mountain Creamery and JB Seafood.

  • Self-guided tours of the farm: all day
  • Live entertainment: Woo-Yeahs 10:00-2:00 and Matt McGinn 2:00-6:00
  • Bee keeping demonstrations by Rick Nestler: 1:00 and 3:30
  • Presentations on the Civil War history of the farm: 11:00 and 3:00

Wine Trail Traveler enjoyed visiting and writing an article about Distillery Lane Ciderworks last year. Early this spring a family member enjoyed taking a daylong cider making class at DLC. Check out what DLC has to offer.

Another Good Concept to Increase Wine Tourism

A couple of years ago we spent a couple of days visiting wineries on Long Island with one of our daughters who lives in New York City. NYC is not particularly driver friendly and we do try to avoid it when possible. So I found this email from Laurel Lake Vineyards to be interesting and wondering how many other wineries near metropolitan areas are encouraging visitors by providing transportation.

Long Island Wine Country.com is having its 11th Annual Harvest Fest at Laurel Lake Vineyards on September 23. Those living in NYC, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk can have transportation provided. Tickets for the festival are priced at $135 for those who want to drive and $149 for those who want transportation provided. Tickets are available at http://www.longislandwinecountry.com/harvest.html . The price difference for transportation seems reasonable to me. Wouldn’t it be great to visit a festival and know you do not have to drive back home?

The Harvest Fest Luncheon Menu includes:

•Artisan Cheeses with Charcuterie
•Peaches Stuffed With Goat Cheese
•Roasted Tomatoes, Arugula Beef Brochettes
•Melon, Mint & Feta Platter
•Roasted Local Corn W/ Smoked Sea Salt Butter
•Red Wine & Rosemary Pork Loin Roasted In Grape Leaves Over Vine Cuttings
•White Grape & Shallot Roasted Chicken With Summer Squash
•Ice Box Brownies & Assorted Cookies

As I mentioned earlier, I really would like to know if other wineries near cities provided transportation for special events. If you know of any please comment or email me at kathy (at) winetrailtraveler.com.

Cheers, Kathy
