Mulled Wine Recipe for the Holidays

When it comes to the holidays, aromas from the kitchen evoke powerful memories. One of the aromas is mulled wine. Easy to make, warm and delicious a mulled wine can lift spirits during the holiday season. One can use inexpensive wines so mulled wine recipes are economical. Heat ingredients in a crock pot and the aroma will fill the house every time someone fills their glass.

We have several mulled wine recipes in the recipe section of the Wine Trail Traveler website. One of my favorites is the one provided by my son, Kevin, last Christmas. Hope you’ll enjoy it too.

Cheers,
Terry

Another Health Benefit from Red Wine Resveratrol?

There are numerous reports about the potential benefits of moderate wine drinking or perhaps a certain component inherent in the wine that may be good for people. Much of the research is done with red wines. Frequently cited as the reason for affecting health is the positive result from resveratrol a component of red wine.

Recently the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene learned that the National Institutes of Health completed a study showing that resveratrol can help in treating malaria. More studies need to done to verify that this will help malaria patients. It has been estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that 300 to 500 million people suffer from malaria each year. Many people die due to malaria, perhaps one million each year.  Hopefully future studies confirm that resveratrol is beneficial for malaria patients. For more detailed information, read the news release at ASTMH.

If you haven’t heard of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) according to their website, “The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), founded in 1903, is a worldwide organization of scientists, clinicians, and program professionals whose mission is to promote global health through the prevention and control of infectious and other diseases that disproportionately afflict the global poor. Research, health care and education are the central activities of ASTMH members, whose work bridges basic laboratory research to international field work and clinics to country-wide programs.” View the ASTMH website to find out more about the organization.

3. Combine all the dry ingredients together in a bowl and mix well.

Carbon Footprint Labeling on Wine Bottles

In New Zealand, Mobius Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is reportedly the first wine to be bottled with labels for carbon reduction. The image of a footprint on a white label with a number for the carbon emissions per 125ml glass of the wine is on each bottle of wine. The label is certified by Carbon Trust Footprinting Certification Company, which claims to be impartial.

Currently the Mobius Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with the carbon label is available in New Zealand and Australia. As one might imagine the carbon label amount is higher for Australia since transportation is included in the determination of the amount of carbon emitted.

Will a wine label with lower carbon emissions sell better than a higher carbon emissions bottle? I guess it all depends on what is important to a wine consumer. Does price outweigh the carbon footprint? Would consumers purchase any wine based only on carbon emissions? Time will tell.

Carbon foot print labels are not only for wine labels. If you are making a product you may want to find out about having a foot print label for your product. Anyone who is interested in the carbon foot print labels should visit the following websites: http://www.carbon-bonding.com, http://www.carbon-bonding.com/the-carbon-trust-uk.

How about you? Will you purchase a bottle of wine based on carbon emissions?

White Riesling 2008

Chateau Fontaine Vineyard & Winery is located on Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula. The winery has 27.5 acres of grapevines onsite. Varieties include Seyval, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Auxerrois, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. In addition to the red and white wines produced, the winery also produces a cherry fruit wine.

Last night we enjoyed the White Riesling 2008, dry white table wine. It was a bright color almost clear with a touch of yellow. The aroma was of floral and fruit notes. The taste had peach nuances and was smooth. There was a very slight effervescence on the wine but was delightfully refreshing. The crisp finish was fruity. This wine would easily pair with fish and chicken entrées.

Cheers! Kathy
