Canadian Wines Sold in China

Have you noticed that when you go shopping at the malls or stand-alone stores, that the majority of items seem to be made outside of the US? Occasionally, there will be goods from Korea, Thailand, India and other countries but by far it appears that most are from China.

An article about wine sold in China got me to looking at things from the other side of the coin. How many US goods are sold in China?

According to an article in The Standard, “Ontario wineries wooing Chinese consumers,” Canada is selling to Chinese consumers. While visiting Ontario wineries we had discovered that visitors from China enjoyed purchasing Canadian Ice Wine. This article notes that Canadian wines are sold in China.

The author, Monique Beech, wrote “China is among the key export markets for Canadian wineries, second only to the United States. In the fiscal year ending August 2010, Canadian wineries sales were $4.3 million in the Chinese market, up from $2.5 million in 2007.”

Where is the United States in terms of selling wines to China?

Giving the Gift of Wine

With 54 days until Christmas, it seems like a lot of time to do the holiday shopping. Over time I’ve met people who have their shopping done by the middle of November and even by the end of October. Rather than a gift of fruitcake, a tie, candy or toaster, Vint Hill Craft Winery has come up with some great ideas and deals for Christmas gifts.

1. Purchase two cases of wine with the Vint Hill label and get 20 percent off. For those in need of three cases, the discount goes to 30 percent.

2. Purchase Vint Hill American Blend Red Wine with a custom label for $23.00 for each per bottle. There is a minimum order of six cases.”

3. Planning a business or large party?  Buy a barrel of wine for $5,000.  The wine will be custom labeled and bottled. (300 bottles) – it’s only $16.66 a bottle.

Anyone wanting custom labels needs to have that information to the winery by, November 18, 2010.

For more details, see the Vint Hill Craft Winery website. Or visit the winery located in Vint Hill Farms, Virginia. The email is info@craftwinery.com.

Wine for Halloween

Miles Wine Cellars along Seneca Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes’ wine region has a ghostly story to tell. The white table wine is in a silk screened bottle. The transparent image of a young married woman (the ghost) is on the front of the bottle. One can see through the image to the image of the house on the back where this young woman died and haunts today.

I’ve had a bottle of this table wine for a few years and do not have the heart to open it even though the compelling statement, “Experience the spirits within!” are written on the back label.

Have you come across any ghostly bottles of wine?

Cheers,
Terry

The Taste of Wine this Past Weekend

We enjoyed a bottle of wine over the weekend that our daughter Erin’s boyfriend gave to us. It was a Chateau Mio La Foret Bordeaux Superieur 2007. This wine offered ripe dark fruit with a hint of leather on the nose. The wine was full bodied; as it sat in the wineglass it softened and became jammy with dark fruit. The wine had a sweet cherry finish.

This wine is very food friendly. Dinner that night happened to be grilled chicken, potatoes and salad. The wine paired well with the dinner.

What has been your favorite French wine this month?

We also enjoyed the Cab Tennat blend that we bottled in August. The wine kept changing throughout the evening. When first opened it was fruity but as it opened up it offered notes of spice and oak. Over the weekend Erin had a glass of the Cab Tennat and thought it was very good. She also enjoyed the Cab Merlot that we bottled in August at Tin Lizzie Wineworks.

What wine have you enjoyed recently?

Cheers! Kathy
