Celebrate Maryland Wine Week, starting June 14

Vineyard at one of Maryland's newest wineries - Catoctin Breeze

Beginning June 14 and ending June 24 Maryland will begin celebrating the Third Annual Maryland Wine Week. The number of wineries and vineyards in Maryland is continuing to increase and quality is also increasing. If you don’t know Maryland wines, this is the time to discover them.

Wine lovers are likely to discover Maryland wines they will enjoy with dinners or as aperitifs. Maryland vineyards are able to grow different types of wine grapes that include vitis vinifera, hybrids and vitis labrusca. Maryland producers are also making meads, fruit wines and hard ciders.

Whether you are visiting Maryland or live in Maryland, use Maryland Wine Week to explore Maryland wines at wineries, wine shops and restaurants. If you visit a wine shop or restaurant and you don’t see Maryland wine mentioned ask, “Why not?”

Special features to look for during Maryland Wine Week

According to an email from Briana at the Maryland Wineries Association, “Restaurants, wine shops, wine bars, and hotels across the state will be pairing up with local wineries to promote and serve local Maryland wine.”

Special events include Ellicott City’s Sip, Shiver, and Stroll and a Progressive Dinner in Frederick.

Some of the locations celebrating Maryland Wine Week include:

  • Wit & Wisdom in Baltimore
  • Johnny’s in Roland Park
  • Red Red Wine Bar in Annapolis
  • Baldwin’s Station in Sykesville
  •  Beer Wine & Co in Chevy Chase
  • Wine World Beer & Spirits in Abingdon
  • AIDA Bistro & Wine Bar in Columbia
  • The Imperial Hotel in Chestertown

Check out the complete list at Maryland Wine Week. If you do not see your favorite location on this list ask, “Why not?” If you are a restaurant owner, wine shop owner or lodging manager, contact the Maryland Wineries Association to participate.

A wonderful way to celebrate Father’s Day (a day early) is to take Dad this Saturday to the Eat, Drink, Go LOCAL North Beach in Calvert County. This market event will have more than two dozen Maryland wineries, local farmers and vendors.

For more information and details visit the Maryland Wine Week website.

Rosé d’ Or from R.Stuart & Co.

Rosé d'Or from R. Stuart & Co.

Yesterday we decided to introduce our son-in-law to homemade grilled pizza. We had a bottle of a rosé sparkling wine chilling in the refrigerator and opened it just before dinner. It was fun sipping this delightful wine while preparing the pizza.

The sparkling wine, Rosé d’Or, Brut NV, from R.Stuart & Co. in Oregon arrived a couple of months ago with the wine we had blended at the winery last summer. The wine was  a salmon color with many tiny bubbles. This sparkling wine was created with a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The aroma and taste offered notes of summer fruits. The back label offers a great quote from Oscar Wilde, “Only people with no imagination can’t find a good reason to drink champagne.”

Believe it or not, a sparkling wine was great with pizza. We made five pizzas with four different toppings. The first two pizzas one were topped with basil, tomatoes, and hard shredded Parmesan cheese. The next pizza had a pesto topping. Topping four was a combination of tomato sauce, mushrooms, peppers and hard Parmesan cheese.  Pizza five had Mozzarella, pepperoni with a tomato sauce base.

Sparkling wine and pizza may seem a bit unusual to many people who think of sparkling wines and Champagnes as for only special occasions. However, I find these special wines to be refreshing and delightful anytime.

Cheers, Kathy

Visiting Quebec Wineries

Today we are leaving the beautiful province of Quebec where we have spent a week visiting wineries and cideries from Quebec City to Montreal. It’s a bittersweet leaving as we have enjoyed meeting so many passionate winemakers.

We have also met and become friends of the In Vino Veritas Travel Agency owners as well as their social media expert working for In Vino Veritas. For our three day visit of wineries in Croatia earlier this year In Vino Veritas planned our trip that included car rental, several wineries and lodging at three different wineries/vineyards. Everything was very easy when someone else has planned the itinerary.

In Vino Veritas also planned our trip to Quebec, where we learned about Quebec’s wine history and we visited 20 wineries including the cideries.

Quebec is a growing wine region and it’s microclimates provided the opportunity for many cold hardy varieties to grow as well as some vineyards using special techniques to grow some of the world’s popular vinifera grapes.

If you are planning to visit Quebec for a vacation or holiday, stop by some of the wineries to discover what they have to offer you.

Cheers! Kathy

Quebec Wow! Factor for a Winery

While on the wine trails in Quebec, we visited Chapelle Sainte Agnès about a mile north of the Vermont border. Wow! This is how they created the wow factor for their winery and vineyard.

Build a chapel.

A chapel needs a vineyard.

A vineyard needs a chateau.

A chateau needs to make wine. Wow!

Cheers,
Terry

Vin de Glace: Quebec’s Icewine

Most of the wineries we have visited over the past few days produce a vin de glace, an Icewine. The method is slightly different than those Icewines produced in Ontario. In Quebec, the snowfall can accumulate and bury the vines. Finding the grapes would be a challenge. In order to meet this challenge, wine growers cut the grape clusters after the vines become dormant, usually after the first killing frost. The grapes are placed in nets hanging above the vines. Then for the next several days, weeks or months, the grapes hang in the nets. Nature determines how long. The grapes are brought to the winery when the temperatures drop to -8ºC or lower.

In Ontario the grapes remain on the vines when the vines go dormant. They are harvested off the vines when the temperatures reach -8ºC or lower. Ontario doesn’t get the snowfall on their Icewine vineyards like the vineyards in Quebec receive. There is some debate between growers and winemakers about Quebec’s practice of cutting the grapes and placing them in nets above the vine. Detractors claim that there is an exchange between the vine and the grapes and removing the grapes stops this exchange. Quebecers claim that once the vines become dormant, the exchange stops. Research seems to back up the stoppage of the exchange once the vines become dormant.

In Quebec wine growers would have a problem if they harvested Icewine grapes while the grapes are buried in snow. The first problem is where to find the grapes. This is not an easy task. The grapes are fragile and just removing the snow from around the vine could damage the grapes. The second issue is that the grapes are suppose to be brought to the winery after the temperature drops to at least a -8ºC. Grapes placed above the vines in nets can reach this temperature. Grapes covered in snow will not. The snow acts as a blanket.

Method not withstanding, taste the wines and decide for yourself. We were pleasantly surprised at the crispness of the Icewines. They have multiple aromatics and tastes and great acidity that cuts the sweetness. For those who enjoy Icewines, visit Quebec wineries for a Vin de Glace.

Cheers,
Terry

The Taste of Quebec

At Vignoble de la Rivière du Chène we met an intern from France. Before she came to Quebec, people asked her why she wanted to go to Quebec. Can they make wine and grow grapes there? This is similar to a statement made to me about the lack of grape growing in the province. Kathy and I visited three wineries yesterday, each had a vineyard. One vineyard was organic and workers were on the vineyard pulling out weeds. Another vineyard was quite large for the area 16.5 hectares (41 acres). This vineyard was planted with hybrid grapes, however they are experimenting with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The third vineyard we walked in had plantings of French hybrids as well as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay.

Yes there are vineyards in Quebec and yes some are growing some vinifera while most are growing many different hybrids. Depending on the area it can get cold during the winters in Quebec. Snow offers the best protection. The vines are kept low to the ground, low enough to be covered by a blanket of snow. A grower can not count on snow so other methods of protecting vines are needed when the temperatures drop to -23ºC to even -35ºC in some areas (-10ºF to -31ºF). Covering the vines with soil in the fall is one method that will protect the vines from the cold winters. Other growers are experimenting with geo textile coverings that act like a blanket. The geo textile covering can be reused for a few years. Wine grape growers have determined ways to protect vines so that they can grow and survive Quebec winters.

Yes there are vineyards in Quebec. Some growers are even growing vinifera grapes. Many growers are discovering the best hybrid varieties that can flourish in this region. Wine is made in Quebec with grapes grown in this province. Consider visiting the wineries in the province and discover the taste of the place.

Cheers,
Terry
