Lake Erie North Shore Wine Region

We spent three days traveling to wineries in the Lake Erie North Shore Region of Ontario. Many of the wineries are within a few miles of the shore of Lake Erie and enjoy the moderating effects the lake has on vineyards. Twelve wineries dot the landscape from Windsor to Blenheim and south. Expect to taste a range or red and white wines including the classic vinifera grapes. Some wineries produce fruit wines. All take pride in producing wines from locally grown fruit.

Wine tourist are largely drawn from the Detroit metropolitan area, an hour and a half away, and Toronto about three and a half hours away. However there are also plenty of wine enthusiasts that travel to the region from other points in Michigan, Ohio and new York as well as Ontario and Quebec. Most wineries are open daily so travelers during the weekdays will find several of the wineries open.

The majority of the wineries are along the Lake Erie shore from Leamington to Amherstburg about a thirty mile stretch that will take an hour to drive between the wineries. Smith and Wilson Estate Wines is the furthest winery from the main area. They are about an hour further east from Blenheim. However the drive is easy along the coast of the lake and worth the visit.

The photo is the new tasting room at Coopers Hawk Vineyards, opening this weekend, November 12th/13th.

If you are looking for a weekend get-away consider traveling to the Lake Erie North Shore wine region. You can visit several wineries each day and enjoy the wines this southernmost wine region in Canada has to offer.

Cheers,
Terry

Lake Erie North Shore Wineries and Vineyards Mourn the Passing of Gord Mitchell

Gord Mitchell was a winegrower and owner of Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery. Gord Mitchell, 66, died suddenly this past weekend stunning family, friends and the wine industry in western Ontario.

Kathy and I met Gord in August 2008. Gord filled some wine glasses with Pinot Grigio and then sat down with us to talk about wine and the industry. We recall that Gord started as a winegrower. He sold his grapes to other wineries and noticed these other wineries were winning gold medals with his grapes. Then in 2006, he opened the Sprucewood Shores tasting room, a beautiful wine facility in Harro, Ontario. Gord took us on a tour of his state of the art winery. We remember how much his family meant to him. His wife, Hanna, and children became an important part of the winery.

Now the family is dealing with the death of Gord, right in the middle of the winemaking season. Winemakers and industry employees have stepped in to help. Several winemakers are filling in for Gord’s daughter, Tanya, Sprucewood Shores winemaker. Many of the wineries in the Lake Erie North Shore area are sending tasting room staff to Sprucewood Shores to help in their tasting room. Although there is a degree of competition in the wine industry, there is a camaraderie not seen in other industries.

Our hearts go out to Gord’s family in this time of sorrow.

Use Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale as a Cocktail Base

Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale is produced by Jaillance. On the Jaillance So’ Fresh website there are recipes for cocktails made with the Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale. Not having the ingredients, I decided to experiment. One recipe called for rye whisky. So I wondered what would happen if I substituted Bourbon.

The recipe calls for 1/4 oz of rye whisky so I went to measure 1/4 oz of Bourbon. Measuring a quarter ounce takes some resolve. Kathy spent hours shopping for a measuring cup that was graduated in fractions of an ounce. Luckily Bed, Bath and Beyond carries an Oxo measuring cup that has marking for 1/4 oz as well as 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 1 1/2 oz and 2 oz.

My Bourbon was a Russell’s Reserve small batch 10 year old Kentucky Bourbon in a bottle signed by Jimmy Russell. Measure a quarter ounce of Bourbon, a quarter ounce of lemon juice and top off with the Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale. My first thought was, “This tastes like a cocktail.” The Bourbon affected the aroma and taste, however the Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale came through with the orange nuances on the aftertaste. The sparkling wine is slightly sweet so I didn’t nee to add any sugar. You can find recipes on the Jaillance So Fresh site and on Wine Trail Traveler recipe menu under beverages.

Cheers,
Terry

Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale for Thanksgiving Day

This low alcohol sparkling wine should be on your Thanksgiving wine list. The sparkling wine is a blend of mostly Muscat and some Clairette. With its slightly sweet taste, consider pouring a glass of this sparkling wine as Thanksgiving Day guests arrive. The straw colored wine has an aroma of orange blossoms and honeysuckle. There is orange and lemon on the taste. The finish is cleansing.

In America, Thanksgiving Day foods pose many challenges to any wine. I was thinking of what the Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale would pair well with. Kathy’s mother’s cranberry relish comes to mind.

Mom Linck would add orange juice and orange peel to the cranberries for Thanksgiving Day dinner. She would also sweeten the cranberry relish. Put this relish on a piece of turkey and pair with the Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale for a wonderful explosion of food and wine. Because it is a sparkling wine, your palate will be cleansed and ready for the next course. We tend to eat early on Thanksgiving Day. By evening we’re looking for a snack. A fresh baked roll, turkey and cranberry-orange relish would pair nicely with the  Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale.

Clairette de die Cuvée Impériale is produced by Jaillance. Vineyards are located in south eastern France in the Drôme district.

Cheers,
Terry

Thanksgiving Day Wines

Thanksgiving Wines

For many people in the US, Thanksgiving Day is a holiday to look forward to with a sumptuous feast. Are you planning a full traditional roasted turkey dinner including succulent roasted turkey with mashed potatoes? If you don’t like to peel potatoes check out the recipe Rachel Ray suggested with mashed potatoes made with the skins. Think about the cranberries, winter squash, sweet potatoes and salads.

Now you need to decide the beverage to serve. Suggestions include placing bottles of red and white wine on the table. I would add a bottle of sparkling wine or Champagne to the table. Over the weekend, we enjoyed a bottle of sparkling wine. It was produced by Jaillance. This particular wine was blended with Muscat and a less familiar grape called Clairette. This sparkling wine was delightful by itself with its orange blossom nuances but could be equally enjoyed with dinner. In addition to these traditional wines, look for specialty wines including wines made with cranberries or perhaps even pumpkin. Enjoy searching for Thanksgiving wines.

Now there is time to visit a winery, taste wines and decide which wines you would like to serve your guests on Thanksgiving Day. If you don’t live near a winery tasting room then visit a wine shop near you. Many wine shops have knowledgeable staffs who will be happy to help you with your wine choices. Better yet some wine shops offer a select number of wines to taste.

Enjoy searching for Thanksgiving wines. Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate with family and friends.

Cheers, Kathy

Firefly Farms Creamery in Accident, Maryland

Yesterday we enjoyed a delightful trip to Firefly Farms, an artisan goat cheese creamery. The weather could not have been better. By the time we reached western Maryland, it was time to shed our coats. Firefly Farms creamery is located in Accident, Maryland just a short distance from Deep Creek Lake.

Firefly Farms is a boutique creamery creating cheese with goat milk obtained from local farmers. The creamery moved to its new location in 2011 and the public tasting area and market opened at the beginning of October. People traveling to Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resort can easily find Firefly Farms creamery. As soon as one walks into the creamery there is an aroma of cheese. Windows provide great views of the cheese making process and views of the cheeses aging.

Besides several styles of goat cheese to taste and buy, the market offers wines produced by small, boutique wineries. Currently visitors can discover imported and domestic wines with two Maryland wineries being represented. Snack foods are also available in the market.

Whether you are looking for mild cheese or more intense cheese, you are sure to discover a cheese you enjoy at Firefly Farms. Firefly Farms cheeses can be bought at several farmers’ markets and stores including Whole Foods located in the region.

Watch for the release of the companion website to Wine Trail Traveler which will feature cheeses, olive/grape seed oils and vinegars. The companion website will be released in January 2012.
