More than an Average Tasting Room Experience: Huff Estates

There are around 6000 wineries in the United States. Add hundreds more for Canada and you have nearly 7000 wineries to visit. Wine Trail Traveler has visited and written about ten percent of them. There are a handful that offer travelers more than an average tasting room experience.

Prince Edward County juts out into the north side of Lake Ontario. The county is quickly developing into a wine region. The winery that has much to offer visitors is Huff Estates. The winery tasting room offers a stylish sophisticated look. Adjacent to the winery building, visitors can amble through the Oeno Gallery and view works of art by local artists. Behind the gallery there is a recently opened sculpture garden a perfect place to amble and look at sculpture as well as flora. The next complex of buildings is the Inn. Comfortable rooms are located just a short walk from the vineyards. Huff Estates goes beyond the average tasting room by offering visitors a chance to visit an art gallery, sculpture gardens and a restful inn to spend the evening.

Itineraries Help with Planning Visits to Wine Regions

Since 2007 Wine Trail Traveler has been visiting and writing about wineries throughout the United States and in Canada, England, Italy and New Zealand.

In addition to these many articles, Terry created numerous two and three-day itineraries for several wine regions. Currently there are itineraries for wine regions in Canada, New Zealand, US North East, US Mid West, US South and US West. Creating a travel itinerary takes an inordinate amount of time. These itineraries are meant as a tool to help people plan a trip to wine country. The wine travel itineraries are available at http://winetrailtraveler.com/itineraries/tripitineraries.php .

With more than 6,000 wineries in the US, these itineraries will be helpful for travelers and tourists.

Two more weeks of August are left and from September through the beginning of November wineries will be busy harvesting and creating wines. This is a perfect time to visit a wine region!

Summer in the Home Vineyard

This year in our tiny vineyard (10 vines) we lost our Dornfelder grapes to the ravages of heat, insects, and birds. Yes, we sprayed using the same Bordeaux mix we successfully used last year but between the heat, insects, and birds we didn’t stand a chance this year.

However, a few steps away the Niagara grapes are coming along very nicely and it looks as if  we’ll be able to make some of our Niagara wine like we did last year. That’s if we can keep the birds away. In last year’s Niagara wine, we did make a slight error that some might see as a fault – there was a hint of effervescence in the wine. The wine was so good; we hope to repeat the error again this year!

All we’ve learned about winemaking and wine grape growing makes it seem as if there is more potential for failure in the vineyards than in the wineries. One just can’t predict and change Mother Nature. Cheers to the winegrowers who without producing quality grapes, there wouldn’t be quality wines!

This in no way diminishes the important role that the winemaker has in producing quality wines. The winemaker can shape the grapes into the type of wine they want to produce. It takes both the wine grower and winemaker to create quality wines.

Snooth Has Initiated their Global Tasting Initiative

Snooth.com has brought back their Global Tasting Initiative. For the month of August, the Snooth community is encouraged to learn, taste and drink Pinot Grigio. This entire month-long event will use the hashtag #GtiPinotGrigio. Writers, bloggers and consumers are encouraged to chime in with tweets, blog entries and articles about Pinot Grigio.

I seem to recall that Pinot Grigio made a big splash on the wine scene several years ago. It prompted the plantings of many more acres of the varietal grape. However it takes time for a vineyard to grow up and attitudes towards many wine varieties shift over the years. The popularity of Pinot Grigio may have cooled a bit. At the Wineries Unlimited Conference held in Richmond, Virginia during March 2001, Danny Brager from Nielsen Research showed statistics for the wines consumers are purchasing. The white wines showing increases in sales include Riesling and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. However it is the family of Muscat varieties that led the pack during 2010. Pinot Grigio wasn’t mentioned.

A year earlier at the 2009 Drink Local Wine Conference held in Northern Virginia a panel of winemakers was discussing white grape varieties that do well in Virginia. The only Pinot Grigio comment was that it is boring. When I’m not drinking wine, I’m drinking hot or iced tea. My preference is to have a lot of lemon added to my tea. I don’t think lemony citrusy Pinot Grigios are boring. The wine can easily be drunk by itself and pairs well with many foods.

If we look at the wines that Kathy and I make as an indicator, the whites are led by Muscat, trend setting. I do want to make a small batch of Sauvignon Blanc. There are no plans for a Pinot Grigio, however on our next trip to Oregon we’ll re-evaluate that position.

Cheers,
Terry
