Only Two Days Left for Early Bird Special for Wineries Unlimited Conference

The Early Bird Special for the Wineries Unlimited Trade Show & Conference ends January 15, 2011. This date is an extension from the original deadline of December 31, 2010. If you are planning to attend the conference in Richmond, Virginia be sure to get your tickets by January 15th. That doesn’t give you much time but the alternative is to pay full price later.

The 2011 schedule for the Trade Show is March 30 and 31. The Conference will take place beginning March 29 and the last day will be April 1.

If you are wondering what Wineries Unlimited is like, check out the Wineries Unlimited Trade Show & Conference article about the experience at the 2010 Wineries Unlimited Conference. Last year the conference took place in Pennsylvania and the venue for 2011 has changed to the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Virginia.

We hope to see you there!

Leo Grande Vineyard & Winery

We recently enjoyed a Virginia Rosé wine. This was a Roaring Rosé, a red table wine from Leo Grande Vineyards & Winery. Leo Grande is a small farm winery. We paired the Rosé wine with a simply dinner of chicken, baked potatoes and a garden-style salad.

Roaring Rosé was a deeper pink than many Rosés. The aroma and taste were fruity with medium sweetness. This rosé paired well with the chicken dinner. Roaring Rosé was a blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo and Chardonnay. The wine label is elegant using black and gold colors. The image of a lion in gold is centered with the name of the winery surrounding it.

Leo Grande is located in Goode, Virginia in Bedford County in the foothills of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains.  When visiting south-central Virginia, be sure to visit the local wineries including Leo Grande Vineyards & Winery. It is a relaxing visit to travel through Virginia’s countryside to reach the winery. We had the opportunity to visit and write about Leo Grand in 2010. To read a review of the winery, visit the Wine Trail Traveler website.

Some States Offer Help to Wineries and Vineyards

Numerous states offer a variety of help for wineries and vineyards. This assistance ultimately helps the economy. While visiting Texas wineries we discovered how supportive the state is of promoting more vineyards. At the time we were visiting, we kept hearing that there were not enough Texas vineyards to fulfill the needs of the many Texas wineries. Texas was willing to support more vineyards.

Ohio is another state that supports increasing the number and size of vineyards. Thirty grape growers are to receive $2,000 each as reimbursement for purchasing grapevines. According to a Ohio State University Extension’s Ohio Ag Manageronline article, Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program Provides Grant Money to Ohio Grape Growers , the winery industry in Ohio provides jobs for 4,100 and in addition boosts the Ohio economy. The article quotes Robert Boggs, the Ohio Agriculture Director, ‘The Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program helps this industry to contribute more than $580 million to Ohio’s economy and to continue to be a successful industry within our state.’

The encouragement to expand vineyards in Ohio is not new. In 1982, The Vineyard Expansion Assistance Program was established under the Ohio Grape Industries Committee. According to the above mentioned article, “The committee provides marketing and research opportunities to Ohio’s wineries and vineyards and helps increase consumer awareness of Ohio’s modern, high-quality wine industry.”

What is your state doing to help build the wine and vineyard industry?

Wine Creates Bonds in the Global Community: French Cooperage Buys a Cooperage in US

Looking at the world of wine, it’s interesting to see that more and more regions and countries are becoming involved with growing grapes and producing wine. Fifty years ago, if one were talking about quality wine one could pretty much know that the conversation would be about French wine.

Much has changed over the past 50 years. Of course, there was the Judgment of Paris in 1976 that made the world sit up and take notice of California wines and its potential. Today the United States has several wine regions that are producing quality wines.

Worldwide more wines from other countries can be proud of the wines they are producing. Research in creating better wines and vineyards continues. Winemakers from different countries are frequently sharing their knowledge as in the case of Canadian winemakers helping China.

In his book Oz Clarke’s ‘Let Me Tell You About Wine’ he writes about several renowned countries that produce wine. Clarke also mentions a few lesser-known wine producing countries including Lebanon, Cyprus, Israel, Turkey, India, China, Japan and Thailand. It will be interesting to see where these countries are in wine production in a few years.

France is also interested in the US not only as wine competition but also in terms of oak barrels.  According to a recent article in The Press Democrat, “French Company Buys Winemakers Cooperage in Cloverdale” by Nathan Halverson, recently a large French wine-barrel manufacturer, Groupe Charlois, purchased Winemakers Cooperage in Cloverdale, CA. Kudos to Groupe Charlois, which plans to increase production and is retaining the Cooperage employees.

Local Wineries Support Community

Sometimes it makes one wonder about people who don’t want a winery in their own backyard. Sure neighbors need to realize that a winery is a business and that the vineyards are like having a farm next door. Hours can’t be just the traditional 9am to 5pm. However the benefits of having a winery in your own back yard appear to outweigh these inconveniences.

I don’t believe that people realize some of the benefits in having a nearby winery/vineyard. In addition to the preservation of land by vineyards, there are other benefits. Many people may not realize the extent that wineries may go to help build community. Numerous wineries support the community with charity events or donations.

One fine example of  a winery supporting its community is Tarara Winery in Leesburg, Virginia. Tarara Winery has a program for Charitable Giving called “Pour a Little More” (PALM). PALM helps charities by offering a program – on Tuesdays a portion of proceeds is donated to a local group.  In addition, Tarara Winery creates events to support these organizations.  Community groups that benefit from Tarara’s generosity include PotomacLoudoun Literacy Council, Operation Pinecone, Habitat for Humanity, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, Lucketts Volunteer Fire Department and the Loudoun Arts Council.

If you know of a winery that supports communities and charities, please let me know and I’ll write about it.

Winery Events for January 7-9

The holiday season is over and for some the January doldrums may set in. However, if you are looking to stave off the winter doldrums consider visiting some wineries. Numerous wineries have fireplaces aglow adding a warm and cheery place to spend some time. Some wineries may have limited hours during the winter so be sure to check with a winery before traveling to it.

If travel is a problem and you still want something special for a cold winter day consider the offer by Tarara Winery in Virginia. Tarara has a special offer, Winter Warm-Up 2011. They will ship you two bottles of wine (Long-Bomb 1 and Long-Bomb 2) and include Tarara staff favorite chili recipes. So if you prefer, stay home, make chili and enjoy Tarara wine.

For special events at wineries, below is a list to get you started for the New Year.

Enjoy, Kathy
