Last night was the Ferrari-Canaro Vineyards and Winery online wine tasting. We tasted and tweeted about the 2014 Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc Sonoma County, 2013 Ferrari-Carano Merlot Sonoma County and 2012 Ferrari-Carano Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley.

Terry wrote haikus to describe the wines while I wrote brief descriptions. However, besides the quality of the wines I was very interested in the recipes that are on Ferrari-Carano website under Rhonda’s kitchen. The consensus of those tasting the wines and tweeting was that the wines were well-made and delicious.

The Fumé Blanc was used in the Mussels Poached in White Wine and the Capellini with Shrimp, Tomatoes and Arugula. For dinner last night Terry recreated the Capellini with Shrimp recipe. The Fumé Blanc and the other ingredients all blended together creating delicious flavors.

The Merlot was an ingredient for Grilled Spareribs with Balsamic Merlot Glaze and the Braised Venison Stew with Dried Cherries and Chocolate.

The Gorgonzola, Walnut and Cabernet Spread called for two tablespoons of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A Ferrari-Carano Online Wine Tasting

Ferrari Carano Wines

Tomorrow, Thursday May 19, twelve wine enthusiasts will be tasting and tweeting about three wines from Ferrari Carano Vineyards and Winery. The three wines include the 2014 Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc Sonoma County, 2013 Ferrari-Carano Merlot Sonoma County and 2012 Ferrari-Carano Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley.

This special one-hour online tasting event takes place on Thursday at 5pm PDT. The tasting event will feature Rebecka Deike, the associate winemaker at Ferrari-Carano. The moderator of the online wine tasting event is Chelsea Kurnick of McCue Communications.

Ferrari-Carano dates back to 1979 when the first vineyards were purchased by Don and Rhonda Carano. Their first vintage was 1985 and the winery opened in 1987. Today, visitors to Ferrari-Carano can enjoy the Villa Fiore wine shop and tasting room, the Enoteca wine tasting room, Il Terrazzo (an outdoor patio) and five acres of gardens.

The Ferrari-Carano wine styles include: The Classics, Vineyard Selects, Spirit of Italy, PreVail and Dessert Wines.

We look forward to tasting and writing about the three wines that were graciously sent to us for this special event.

Over the weekend, we enjoyed a bottle of Bonny Doon Vineyard’s Le Cigare Volant Reserve 2011. Translated Le Cigare Volant means Flying Cigar.

The wine was a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. The protocols for producing Le Cigare Volant included oak and 20 months in glass carboys sur lie. According to the back wine bottle label, “Our Flying Cigar is based on the traditional Southern style encépagement.”

It is also interesting to note that the bottle is labeled with the ingredients, “INGREDIENTS: Grapes, tartaric acid, and sulfur dioxide. In the winemaking process, the following were utilized: Indigenous yeast, yeast nutrients, and French oak chips.” Bonny Doon is one of the few wineries that lists ingredients that were used to make a wine.

The wine was an opaque dark ruby color. It offered notes of black fruits including black raspberries, plums and cherries. There was also a hint of baked bread with mild tannins and a medium/full body. The finish was crisp and fruity. This was an easy-to-drink red wine that would be great as a 3P (porch, patio, pool) wine.

We enjoyed this wine with a home-baked delicious pizza. The pizza crust was made with sourdough starter. Pizza toppings included mozzarella, cheese, chicken, spinach, mushrooms and broccoli.

You may want to consider this wine for a summer picnic or barbecue. This enjoyable red wine might be an idea for Memorial Day or Father’s Day, too.

Wine in the Woods Festival

Maryland has a growing wine industry. More wine lovers are becoming aware of the potential that Maryland has for delicious wines obtained with well managed vineyards. Add  good winemaking protocols  and you will have delightful wines. Direct to consumer shipping has helped the Maryland wine industry to grow over the past few years.

Next weekend, May 21 and May 22, will be the annual Wine in the Woods festival. Almost 30 Maryland wineries will be present. This popular festival in Columbia, Maryland offers live music, food, wines, and artisans & crafters.

Wine lovers will discover numerous types of wines available for tasting. Almost half of Maryland’s wineries will be presenting wines at the festival. Want to learn more about wine? Then plan to attend one of the wines seminars taking place at the festival. Topics include:

  • Wine Tasting 101
  • Maryland White Wines
  • Maryland Red Wines
  • Maryland Sweet and Dessert Wines

For 2016 numerous artisans and crafters will feature their products. Enjoy browsing the wide selection of artistic products available including: jewelry, photography, canvas paintings, stained glass, hanging chairs, forged iron ware, and soy waxed candles.

Music events are a big part of the Wine in the Woods festival. While tasting wine listen to jazz, rock, soul, pop, latin, swing and reggae.

And of course there is the wonderful selection of foods. A big part of enjoying wine is the food to enjoy with it. A variety of foods will be available including sausage wraps, brick oven pizza, cajun shrimp, crab cakes, pit beef, burgers, quesadillas, bruschetta, funnel cakes, butterfly fries, kettle corn, cinnamon roasted nuts and curry chicken. For vegetarians K. Asian Grill will have vegetarian lo mein.

Tips for enjoying the festival.

  • Wear sun screen and comfortable shoes
  • Keep hydrated,plan to drink as much water as wine
  • Eat whether at home or at the festival, before drinking wine
  • Plan to purchase a bottle or two of wine to enjoy at home or with friends.

Appalachian High Country AVA Proposed

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, also frequently referred to as the TTB is proposing a new American Viticultural Area. If established, the new AVA will be the Appalachian High Country Viticultural Area. The petition for the AVA was submitted by Johnnie James, owner of Bethel Valley Farms, for the High Country Wine Growers Association.

According to the information on the TTB website, the area will include several counties in North Carolina, Tennessee and one county in Virginia. In North Carolina the counties of Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell and Watauga will be involved. Two counties involved in Tennessee are Carter and Johnson. In Virginia the affected county is Grayson County. The area cover 2,400 square miles.

Currently the region has 21 vineyards that cover 71 acres. Eight more vineyards covering 37 acres will be added in the future. In addition to the vineyards, there are 10 commercial vineyards.

What makes this proposed  Appalachian High Country AVA special?

This mountainous region is frequently known as “High Country.”  East of the Mississippi, this region has the highest average elevation.

In addition to the considerable elevation of the included area, the region has other properties that will affect the growth of grapevines and ultimately the wine.

For example the proposed AVA offers:

  • a mean slope angle of 35.9 percent
  • high levels of solar irradiance
  • a cool climate
  • short growing season
  • average precipitation of 48.6 inches

According to the petition filed for the new AVA, “The soils of the proposed Appalachian High Country AVA are derived from igneous and metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and granite. The soils are described as well-drained soils with a fine, loamy texture.”

The TTB encourages responses to the proposed Appalachian High Country AVA. If you have concerns or if you are supportive of the new AVA contact the TTB to express your interest.

It’s National Shrimp Day!

Risotto with Sausage and Shrimp

Ingredients

1/2 Pound Sweet Italian Sausage, Crumbled
1/2 Pound Medium Shrimp, Peeled And Deveined
3 Tablespoons Butter, Divided
1/2 Cup Onion, Chopped
1 Cup Uncooked U.S. Arborio Or Medium Grain Rice
1/3 Cup Dry White Wine
2 Cups Chicken Broth
3 Cups Water
1/4 Cup Parmesan Cheese, Grated
Ground White Pepper, To Taste
1/2 Cup Heavy Cream

Directions

1. Cook sausage in large skillet over medium heat. Remove from skillet; drain on paper towels. Set aside.

2. Cook shrimp in 2 tablespoons butter until it turns pink. Remove from skillet; set aside.

3. Cook onion until soft in remaining 1 tablespoon butter. Add rice and stir 2 to 3 minutes. Add wine; stir until absorbed. Increase heat to medium high; stir in 1 cup broth. Cook, uncovered, stirring frequently, until broth is absorbed. Continue stirring and adding remaining 1 cup broth and 3 cups water, allowing each cup to be absorbed before adding another, until rice is tender and mixture has a creamy consistency. It will take approximately 25 to 30 minutes.

4.Stir in cheese, pepper, cream, and reserved sausage and shrimp. Stir until mixture is creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Serve immediately.

Rhone Grape Variety: Picpoul

Picpoul is also known as Piquepoul. Picpoul translates to “lip stinger.” The Picpoul variety originally goes back to the French Languedoc region. The grape is frequently found as a white grape but there are also some Picpoul Noir grapes available. Today the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation includes Picpoul as one of its 13 grape varieties allowed. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Picpoul Noir vines are pruned in a goblet style whereas Picpoul Gris vines are pruned with either the aforementioned goblet style or the bilateral cordon de royat style.

Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles has been growing Picpoul (Piquepoul Blanc) for many years and wrote that this grape is known in France for its minerality, acidity and lemon flavor. On their website they wrote about bringing Picpoul into the country and its release from quarantine. “Picpoul, with its reputation for sharp acidity, was the first of these high-acid whites that we brought into quarantine, and was in fact the first supplemental varietal we brought in of any sort. It was released from quarantine in 1998, and we spent the next two years propagating and grafting it.  We planted approximately one acre of Picpoul in 2000, and received our first significant harvest in 2003. It has been such a success that we grafted over two acres of Roussanne to Picpoul in the winter of 2005, and got our first harvest from that new acreage in the fall of 2008. We plan to plant two additional acres of Picpoul in the next few years.”

In the US Picpoul is one of the Rhone Rangers’ 22 grape varieties allowed. According to the Rhone Rangers website:

“Picpoul/Piquepoul Blanc

Native to the Languedoc area, Piquepoul means “lip stinger,” an apt description of its high acidity must. Prior to the phylloxera invasion, Picquepoul was popular, and often blended with the Clairette. When vineyards were replanted in the early 1900s, however, its low yields did not gain it prominent placement in the vineyards of Southern France. It is still used in the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and has floral aromatics and soft tannins.”

While visiting Halter Ranch earlier this spring, we tasted one of their blends. The vineyards include several Rhone varieties including the Picpoul Blanc. For our Wine Trail Traveler article we wrote, “We started with the 2015 Rosé, a blend of Grenache, Picpoul Blanc, Mourvèdre and Syrah. The light orange colored wine had notes of light red berry fruits. The finish was citrus yielding to mineral. At the bottom of the bottle there were white crystals. The winemaker, Kevin Sass, wrote a note for the visitors stating that the crystals were natural and reflected the calcium limestone soils in the vineyards. There was a faint hint of salt on the rosé’s finish.”

Picpoul is typically used as a blending grape rather than as a single grape variety for a wine. As you travel to wineries look for wines made with Picpoul and add it to your list of grape varieties you have tasted.

Mint Julep for the Kentucky Derby

In celebration of the Kentucky Derby tomorrow, May 7, create this lovely Mint Julep made with 3 ounces of Seyval Blanc. The recipe is from LaBelle Winery in New Hampshire.

Seyval Blanc Mint Julep

Ingredients

3 oz LaBelle Winery Seyval Blanc
1½ oz Kentucky Bourbon (we like Maker’s Mark)
½ oz Simple Syrup
Fresh Mint Leaves

Directions

Muddle ice in the bottom of a shaker; place ice and all ingredients into the shaker and shake vigorously. Pour over ice into a highball glass and garnish with a sprig of mint.
