Celebrated the New Year with a Cava

010115aSince attending the 50 Great Cavas media tour last October, I have had several cavas over the months. I am quite impressed with the sparkling wines especially those produced from native grapes Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada. We are visiting our daughter and son-in-law in the Dayton area of Ohio and I forgot to bring a bottle of cava I brought back from Spain. We went to a wine shop in search for a cava and were rather disappointed in what they had to offer. It seems that cavas have not made much of a splash in the middle of the country.

There were a couple made predominantly of Chardonnay, I wasn’t interested in those. I did find one made from Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada and decided to give it a try. The store had a 2012 Naverán Brut. The blend was 50% Xarel-lo, 30% Macabeo and 20% Parellada. The yellow color sparkling wine had an abundance of bubbles that persisted even though we were drinking the cava in a red wine glass. There was citrus on the aroma and taste. The 11.5% alcohol wine retailed for $14 at a local Dayton wine shop.

Perhaps the cava producers in Spain should mount a pr campaign in the United States similar to the wine producers in Rioja. Cavas are affordable and offer a variety of styles made with several different grape varieties. Throughout the next few months, our attention will move to champagnes. Kathy and I are attending the International Wine Tourism Conference in Champagne, France in April.

Terry

Wine Trail Traveler 2014 Year in Review

Terry lifts the cover of the qvevri in Georgia.

Terry lifts the cover of the qvevri in Georgia.

Wine Trail Traveler’s 2014 was a very busy year, even though we visited fewer wineries than other years. Our winter was spent preparing for the March publication of our third book, Georgia, Sakartvelo: the Birthplace of Wine. The book was published in March, just in time for us to take copies to Georgia for the International Wine Tourism Conference in late March. During the early April FAM trip in Georgia, Kathy and I opened a qvevri that we filled with grapes in September of 2013. The wine was enjoyed by the members of the media FAM trip to Georgia. We brought a qvevri home to the United States and followed the protocol to prepare it for making a qvevri wine. Qvevri winemaking is the only winemaking technique that is on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

We made another trip to Europe in October, this time to Spain. We spent a few days in Barcelona and then visited wineries in Montsant & Priorat and the Penedés. We were once again, part of a media group visiting Cava producers in the Penedés. We have a new appreciation for cavas and have been promoting them to our friends and family.

Trips within the United States included two trips to sunny California. Our June trip was to the Central Coast, specifically Santa Barbara County. While visiting wineries in the different Santa Barbara AVAs I was taking a wine certification course, the CWAS, California Wine Appellation Specialist. Taking the course and traveling to the different appellations at the same time made the AVAs come to life and one begins to notice the difference in wines produced from the different areas.

Steven Spurrier led our tasting of 48 Santa Barbara County wines.

Steven Spurrier led our tasting of 48 Santa Barbara County wines.

Another lifetime experience is meeting some of the important personalities in the wine industry. While in Santa Barbara, we were asked to sit on a panel to taste and judge over forty Santa Barbara wines. Leading the panel was famed Judgement of Paris personality, Steven Spurrier. Mr. Spurrier was every bit a gentleman. When he agreed with the panel, we heard him exclaim, “brilliant.” When Mr. Spurrier disagreed with the panel we heard a “majority rules,”  and we believed that he was pleased with our selection.

We were away from home for our 42nd wedding anniversary, but had a lovely weekend with Paul and Merrill Bonarrigo at their Messina Hof Winery and Resort in Bryan, Texas. We were joined with some of our IWINETC alumni, Tom Plant, Melba Allen and Allison Markin. It was a wonderful visit even though it was rather warm in Texas.

Stagecoach Vineyards, Atlas Peak, Napa Valley

Stagecoach Vineyards, Atlas Peak, Napa Valley

We made another trip to California in September, a whirlwind trip that included visiting wineries in Lodi, Clarksburg, Lake County and Napa. One of the vineyards visited was Stagecoach Vineyards in the Atlas Peak AVA of Napa Valley.  As we sat out in the vineyard tasting Krupp Brother’s wines, we had an amazing realization that our grapes we use to make wine at a teaching winery in Maryland, came from this area of Napa Valley. We also discovered that although most years Napa Valley fruit is fantastic, 2014 may be one of the best vintages.

Our main winemaking experience was cut in half since our grapes arrived from Napa Valley while we were in Spain. We did return in time to press the grapes and rack to our barrel. This year we changed from making a straight Cabernet Sauvignon to a Bordeaux-like blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Rather than dump all the pomace on the compost pile, we took some home and made a second run wine. The grapes were fantastic and the second run wine should also be good. Our winemaking for the year finished with fermenting muscat grapes in our buried qvevri, then sealing the qvevri for winter. We are anxious to see how the wine will turn out in March of 2015.

These are just some of the highlights of 2014. We wonder what 2015 will bring.

Cheers,
Terry

While out shopping this weekend, remember to pick up your favorite food and beverage items for Christmas. If you are planning to visit a winery before Christmas look for wines that you like and will complement Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas Day brunch and dinner.

While looking for wine, consider having red and white wines available.
Hint: If any of the recipes you follow use wine, it is a nice idea to serve the same wine.

Below are a few recipe ideas, with links to the recipes, you may want to try this year.

First Major Wine Tasting Event of the Year Takes Place in a Railroad Museum

Cava tasting in a train museum in Spain

Cava tasting in a train museum in Spain

The Maryland Winery Association will help Marylanders and wine enthusiasts escape the winter blues by hosting Winter Wine at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore on January 8th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. At first glance, why would one hold a wine tasting in a railroad museum? Perhaps it is because consumers have a romantic notion of railroads and wine. Vineyardists, winemakers, engineers and railroad workers may not share the romantic notion of iron horses and wine, but many that do not work in the industries do.

Kathy and I had a delightful wine tasting experience at the Museu del Ferrocarril de Catalunya, a train museum near Barcelona, Spain earlier this fall. It was quite a treat to amble past a myriad of engines and cars displaying the history of Spanish train transportation. The B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore has one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of trains and railroad artifacts. I recall as a child taking out the train set, especially during the holidays. I remember an engine and cars with B&O decals on them. This also brought back memories of my first wine tastings that were blends of Manischewitz and Vernors Ginger Ale.

The 2015 Winter Wine event begins at 6:00 pm with a Vintage Vidal Reception, followed by the general tasting in the railroad roundhouse from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Vidal Blanc is one of the workhorse white grapes in Maryland. Attendees at this special tasting will have opportunities to taste Vidal wines crafted in many different ways from sparkling to dessert and those in between. Tickets for the Vintage Vidal Reception and the Roundhouse Tasting are $80 per person. Tickets for just the Roundhouse Tasting are $65 per person. You can purchase tickets on the Maryland Winery Association website.

The elegant event, dress to impress, includes hors d’oeuvres and music by Sac Au Lait.

Cheers,
Terry

Sokol Blosser Sparkling Wines for the Holidays

Recently Sokol Blosser, located in Oregon, sent us a package of wines and goodies to sample and write about. We visited Sokol Blosser a few years ago and after our visit we wrote an article about the winery, vineyards and wines. The article is available online. “Sokol Blosser is a green winery with a sustainable vineyard. Solar panels provide one-third of the wineries total energy needs. The vineyard uses native plants to attract beneficial insects. Sokol Blosser is “good to the earth in the ways wines are produced. Grapes are handpicked and sorted. While visiting, walk to the vineyards and observe the surrounding countryside, reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside in Italy.”

Sokol Blosser Sparkling Rose of Pinot Noir Brut

Sokol Blosser Sparkling Rose of Pinot Noir Brut

Our Sokol Blosser package included: two sparkling wines, a Sokol Blosser Cocktail Sauce, Sokol Blosser Rhubarb Rosemary Jelly and Maple Rosemary Roasted Nuts. You may want to consider any of these items to add to your own handmade gift basket. For those ordering from the Sokol Blosser online store, wine selections can be shipped to more than 30 states. Check to see if they are allowed to ship to your state.

Since we had family, from Portland, Oregon visiting in early December, we had the opportunity to pair the wines with two different traditional Christmas meals for our family. We first opened the Sokol Blosser Sparkling Rose of Pinot Noir Brut in the wine room and paired it with the Rhubarb Rosemary Jelly  spooned over brie. The jelly was full of the flavor of rhubarb with an intense rosemary essence. The consistency of the jelly was easy to spread over the cheese. It matched well with the sparkling rosé. Then we went to the dinner table for a holiday ham dinner. The sparkling rosé was festive and had a light pink color. The 12.5% alcohol wine had notes of cherry and citrus and complimented the ham.

Sokol Blosser Evolution

Sokol Blosser Evolution

On another evening we had a traditional turkey dinner with turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and sides. For this meal we opened the Sokol Blosser Evolution. The sparkling Evolution is a favorite for our Portland family members. It’s the wine they alway purchase when visiting the winery. The 12.5% alcohol sparkling wine was a yellow color and offered notes of honeysuckle, apple and citrus. It paired nicely with the turkey and stuffing.

The Maple Rosemary Roasted Nuts also paired well with the sparkling Evolution. We decide to save the cocktail sauce for Christmas Day. Sokol Blosser makes holiday gift giving easy. Although the sparkling wines paired well with Christmas dinners, they would just as easily go with New Year’s Eve celebrations with an assortment of foods.

Cheers,
Terry & Kathy

Tasters Guild Maryland

Sparkling wines at Tasters Guild Maryland holiday brunch

Sparkling wines at Tasters Guild Maryland holiday brunch

Tasters Guild Maryland chapter members are enthusiastic about still wines and sparkling wines. Larry Elletson and his wife Dottie Wayne who lead the Central Maryland chapter enjoy wine.  Larry noted that at restaurants he enjoyed matching the foods with the wines. They are very knowledgeable about wines around the world and especially from Eastern Europe.

Larry and Dottie organize events for the members of Tasters Guild Maryland. Normally there is a fee to cover the food and the wines. Sunday was the Annual Bubbly Brunch. About 35 Tasters Guild Maryland members attended this special brunch.

The brunch was held at the Highland Inn in Highland, Maryland. The Highland Inn is small but with an added room to the back there was plenty of room for everyone.

Appetizers included Smoked Salmon Canapé, Sapidus Farms Oysters, and surprisingly Chicken and Waffles. The last appetizer was a bite size piece of breaded chicken on a tiny piece of waffle. They were so good I could have stuffed myself with them. The appetizers were enjoyed with two sparkling wines, Gruet Blanc de Blanc Extra Dry from Albuquerque, New Mexico and Santa Julia, Brut Rosé from Mendoza, Argentina. The Gruet was produced with Chardonnay and bottle-aged for 18 months.  The Brut Rosé was made with Pinot Noir.

Our first course was a Seasonal Berry Parfait. Large blackberries, red raspberries and blueberries were included. The parfait was paired with Bodoz, Cremant Du Jura Brut from Jura, France.

The second course consisted of a house-made Chorizo, a 60 Degree Egg and a few potatoes paired with Argyle Vintage Brut 2011 from Willamette Valley, Oregon. Terry really enjoyed the Chorizo while I thought it was too spicy hot.

The entreé was Quiche du Jour paired with Sephora Brut from Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. The quiche was light and the pastry tender.

Dessert was a Cheese Blintz paired with Botani Sparkling Muscat from Malaga, Spain. I really did not need the Cheese Blintz, the floral sparkling muscat by itself would have been the perfect dessert for me.

We had a great time talking with so many people about many things including the sport of curling. When you have time check out the Tasters Guild which has 40 chapters throughout the country.

Happy Holidays!
Kathy and Terry

Make Your Own Holiday Gift Baskets with Flair

I love getting a gift basket! Gift baskets are delightfully decorated and appear to be so cheerful. Gift baskets can be ideal gifts for everyone. Gift baskets are also great for the person who has “everything.” Below are some ideas to get you started on creating your own special gift baskets. You might want to create a gift basket as an extra gift to have on hand in the sad event you forgot someone!

It’s only the 10th of December so this week while you are shopping pick up a few things and make your own Christmas or holiday gift baskets. When making baskets for wine lovers, add a few additional items such as cork screws, wine bottle stoppers, a couple of wine glasses and  a Riedel stemware polishing cloth.

For each gift basket pick a theme. For the container use a colorful box or basket.

Visit a general hobby store (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Joanns) to find baskets, fillers, clear plastic bags or shrink wrap.

Add a copy of one of our books and a bottle of wine to complete the basket!

For the Cook

  • pot holders
  • ktichen towels
  • red wine vinegar
  • Champagne vinegar
  • a few favorite recipes
  • whisk
  • measuring spoons
  • grape seed oil (Aprés Vin)

For the Golfer

  • golf balls
  • tees
  •  ball markers
  • golf towels with “I Love Wine”

For the Puzzler Lover

  • a puzzle
  • puzzle glue
  • puzzle preserver
  • 3-D puzzle

For the Needle Crafter

  • Crochet hooks
  • Crochet or knitting patterns
  •  Knitting needles
  • Cross Stitch Kits
  • Yarn
  • Crochet thread

For the Traveler

  • luggage tags
  • passport holder
  • travel journal
  • a wine calendar
  • driving gloves
  • maps

For the Painter

  • art book

When filling the basket remember to add an inscribed copy of:

A Wine Journey
A Wine Tourists Guide: Visiting Tasting Rooms
Georgia, Sakartvelo: the Birthplace of Wine

Books are available from the Wine Trail Traveler store.

After assembling the items, begin filling the basket with the filler. Put in enough filler so the additional items do not sink to the bottom of the basket. Arrange the selected items; add colorful flowers or ribbons. Insert the basket into a clear plastic bag and tie with a big colorful ribbon. (If using shrink wrap, follow the package instructions.) Add a holiday tag to your basket.

Enjoy the season even more by adding your creativity to the gift giving!

Cheers! Kathy
