Annual New Zealand Wine Day

In February, 21 New Zealand wineries belonging to the Complexity group, are celebrating Waitangi Day with the 2nd Annual New Zealand Wine Day on Saturday, February 4.  Wine enthusiasts around the world can take part in this wine tasting by doing a virtual tasting.

This event is in coordination with Wine Channel TV. The virtual wine tasting includes a cooking demonstration. To register or learn more, visit http://nzwineday2012.eventbrite.com. When tweeting, use the hash tag #nzwineday

The wines included in the tasting are from eight New Zealand regions including Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Marlborough and Waipara. Wine Trail Traveler traveled to New Zealand in 2010 and visited several of these wineries. Small or large the New Zealand wineries and their wines are impressive. Visit the New Zealand section on Wine Trail Traveler for more information.

What New Zealand wine will you enjoy for New Zealand Wine Day?

About Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day is a New Zealand national holiday, which is celebrated on Monday, February 6.
Waitangi Day was established in the 1930’s to commemorate the signing of a treaty between the British Crown and Maori chiefs. The treaty signed in 1840 is one of the important documents in the establishment of New Zealand.

Paul and Merrill Bonarrigo Present at the IWINETC

Over the next few weeks we’ll write about some of the people we know attending and presenting at the International Wine Tourism Conference, IWINETC later this month.

Our first visit to Texas wineries was in April of 2009. On our first day we met Paul and Merrill Bonarrigo at their Messina Hof winery. Their winery, with 42 acres of vineyards, a restaurant, wine bar and bed and breakfast is among the few in the country that could be the poster child for the agri-tourism movement. Our late afternoon visit lasted for hours while we learned about Paul and Merrill and their passions for wine. The roots of the couple’s families are traced to Messina, Sicily and Hof, Germany.

Southern hospitality and Texas charm combined with wine, food and conversation enveloped hours that vanished in a moment. We learned of Paul’s red beret and Merrill’s cookbook. We learned of the challenges of placing a large chandelier in the foyer of the villa bed and breakfast. We toured the property and spent a lovely evening at the Villa to wake to a gourmet breakfast.

Our conversations with the Bonarrigo’s touched on many aspects of wine. Paul mentioned that he will taste other winemakers’ wines, always a good practice for a winemaker. When asked how he handles a wine that is faulted or he doesn’t like, Paul’s answer caused Kathy and me to look at each other and smile. Kathy and I feel strongly that since WineTrailTraveler is a virtual visitor center, it isn’t our job to bash a winery or its wines. If there is a wine we dislike for whatever reason, we’ll simply note that the wine is “interesting.” Later when we write about the wines we omit those that we felt were interesting.  When I asked Paul about wines he didn’t like, he mentioned that he would call them “interesting.” We have since met other wine writers that use the word “interesting” to mean a wine they personally disliked.

We look forward to spending time with Paul and Merrill on the blogger/media FAM trip to Umbria and Campania and the International Wine Tourism Conference in Perugia, Umbria, Italy. At the conference, Paul and Merrill are presenting, “Connecting with visitors and turning them into long term customers.”

We plan to take a couple bottles of a 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon that we made at a winery in Virginia. The wine was bottled last August after 20 months in French oak. Hopefully the Bonarrigos won’t find our wine interesting.

Cheers,
Terry

Niagara Ice Wine Festival 2012

Every year I say, “Next year I’ll attend an Ice Wine Festival.” Unfortunately, I can’t tolerate the cold so it’s always easy to say I’ll do it next year. I do think about the workers who need to go out to pick the frozen grapes, perhaps brushing away snow in the middle of the night. Layers of clothing must be the only way to do it.

Despite my reservations about the cold, Icewine Festivals sound like a lot of fun. Plus all that delicious Icewine to taste, what more can you ask for?

Niagara Icewine Festival

The 2012 Niagara Icewine Festival takes place January 13 thru the 29.

On January 13, the Niagara Icewine Festival starts off with the Icewine Unveiled: A Masquerade Gala. Participants will enjoy VQA Icewines and table wines from more than 30 Canadian wineries. The event includes cuisine by Fallsview Casino chefs, entertainment and a silent auction. Price: $175

Several days during the festival, wine and cheese seminars will take place. Choose to participate in one of the All You Need is Cheese seminars:

  • Sweet & Sinful Wine and Cheese Pairings
  • Incredible Canadian Cheeses…Meed An Old Friend
  • Fielding Takes Flight
  • The Ultimate Ice Wine and Cheese Experience
  • Vintage Icewine and Cheese Tasting
    Each seminar is $20.

Of interest to many people is the Discovery Pass. Those who purchase a Discovery Pass can participate in six winery experiences over three weekends. Those without the Discovery Pass pay $10 at each winery unless noted.

For more information visit the Niagara Wine Festival website. If you want more information about the Canadian wineries see these articles.

Is Your EVOO really an EVOO?

On Saturday, I took my usual jaunt to the public library, from which I had borrowed Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil which details the misconception about extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Even though I had already read it and written a review of it, I would have liked to have written down a few of the reference websites mentioned. However, seven library patrons have requested the book, obviously people are interested in olive oil. Add scandal and its almost a thriller.

The good news is that the author, Tom Mueller, has started a website where you can find the article he wrote in 2007 as well as links to olive sites etc.

Only released in early December, Extra Virginity, seems to have hit a sore spot for the manufacturers and distributors of olive oil that is labeled as extra virgin olive oil but in reality is not according to the definition.

In California at UC Davis, a reputable university, a test was done to check the quality of extra virgin olive oils that were purchased at a variety of stores. The results were dismal showing that a large majority of extra virgin olive oils were not “extra virgin.” One critic of the study indicated the testing methods were not accurate. Who should one believe: someone related to the olive oil industry or or university research?

Pure and simple selling any item the information on the label needs to be accurate. Shouldn’t there be truth in labeling for olive oil and all products?

For more information about Extra Virginity, see my review.

Torta Rustica Recipe Pairs with Tempranillo

Check out this recipe which calls for three different cheeses. The suggested pairing is a 2009 Tempranillo produced by Milbrandt Vineyards in Prosser, Washington.

Enjoy, Kathy

Torta Rustica

Ingredients

2¼ c all-purpose flour
¾ c cornmeal
½ t salt
¾ c butter, diced
3 eggs
4 T cold water
1½ c ricotta cheese
4 oz feta cheese
1 c grated Parmesan cheese
¼ c chopped parsley
2 T chopped fresh basil
2 t chopped fresh oregano
2 c shredded mozzarella cheese
½ lb prosciutto
1 (10 oz) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
½ (16 oz) jar roasted red peppers, drained and patted dry

Directions

1. Mix flour, cornmeal and salt in a bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2. Beat 2 eggs with 3 tablespoons cold water; stir into flour mixture until dough holds together. Add another tablespoon water if needed. Shape 2/3 of the dough into flattened round; repeat with remaining 1/3 . Wrap. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes or until firm enough to roll.

3. In another bowl, combine ricotta cheese, crumbled feta, Parmesan cheese, 1 egg, parsley, basil and oregano until well blended.
4. Have an 8 or 9 inch springform pan ready. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the larger portion of dough into a 15 inch diameter circle. Carefully place in ungreased pan; press lightly against bottom and sides. Trim overhanging dough to 1 inch from pan rim.

5. Scatter half of the mozzarella over the bottom of the crust. Next arrange half the prosciutto slices in an even layer. Spread with ricotta cheese mixture, then sprinkle with spinach. Cover with the remaining prosciutto slices. Press down gently to pack layers. Add red peppers in a single layer, and top with the remaining mozzarella. Press down again.

6. Roll out remaining dough to 8 or 9 inch circle. Place over filling to cover. Moisten edges, and seal crusts together. Crimp or flute edges. Crust should not extend above pan rim. Beat remaining egg, and brush over the crust. Cut several small vents in top crust for steam to escape.

7. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 1 hour, or until crust is deep golden brown and pulls away from sides. Cool in pan on wire rack 45 minutes. Remove pan sides; cool completely. Cut into 12 wedges. Serve at room temperature.

Chef’s Note: This dish can be served with a chunky tomato sauce or Hollandaise sauce.
