On the Road with Tom Plant

We are looking forward to meeting people and renewing previous acquaintances at the Wine Pleasures FAM trip for bloggers and media taking place later this month in Italy. We first met Tom Plant at a winery media event in Temecula, California. Tom was also present at another media event at another Temecula winery as well as the 2011 Wine Bloggers’ Conference in Charlottesville, Virginia. What first impressed us with Tom was his photography equipment. He carries an expensive-looking camera and flash unit that takes wonderful pictures. But photography is only one of Tom’s passions. The other is wine tourism.

Tom and his wife, Laura, own the wine blog WINEormous and the Temecula based wine tour company Temecula Wine Tours. We took a tour of Temecula wineries with Tom in the fall of 2010. Since we had already visited many of the wineries in Temecula, we presented Tom with a challenge, where to take us that we hadn’t visited thus far. It didn’t take him long to develop an itinerary. We visited four wineries in the region that we hadn’t previously visited. At each of the wineries, Tom had us talk with the owner or winemaker. During our time with Tom, we talked about wine, a subject that can be discussed for hours if not days and weeks.

It will be fun to experience wineries in Umbria and Campagna with the FAM group of bloggers and media. Perhaps I can pick up some photography tips from Tom Plant.

Check out Tom’s blog at WINEormous. You can also read a WineTrailTraveler article about the Temecula Wine Tours with WINEormous.

Cheers,
Terry

Wine Pleasures is sponsoring the 4th Annual International Wine Tourism Conference. The company is also hosting a Familiarization Tour that includes the Conference. Those participating in the familiarization tour will have the opportunity to visit an olive oil museum, visit wineries, attend a cooking class and much more.

The 4th Annual International Wine Tourism Conference and Workshop takes place January 30 to February 2. This conference provides a wonderful way for wineries to embrace and support wine tourism. This year the conference is being held in Perugia located in Umbria, Italy.

Topics include wine tourism, wine and art, wine and food, technology and wine tourism, wine education, listening to wine tourists, and much more. Specific wine regions will also be included in presentations including Australia, Italy, Burgundy and the Pacific Northwest. Individual wineries will also be included.

Want to know more about the conference? Then check out the 2012 Annual International Wine Tourism Conference website. Tickets are still available. Anyone interested in the wine industry will want to check out his opportunity.

An article and blog entries are available on the Wine Trail Traveler website.

A Tasty Petite Sirah by McNab Ridge Winery

Recently we enjoyed a Petite Sirah produced by McNab Ridge Winery. The dark ruby red wine paired well with tomato-based pasta. A hint of licorice was noticeable. Other attributes included fruit notes and tannins.

McNab Ridge Winery is located in Mendocino County, California. Mendocino County is frequently referred to as the world’s greenest region. McNab Ridge Winery is in Ukiah while the tasting room is in Hopland, CA.  The winery has four categories of wine: McNab Ridge, McNab Ridge Family Reserve, Zellerbach and Fun Bunch. Wine varieties include Chardonnay, Merlot, Roussanne, French Colombard, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendo Zinfandel and Coro.

An article based on a visit is available online.

New Jersey Wineries and Wine Enthusiasts Need Your Help

The New Jersey State Assembly and Senate have passed legislation that will permit small wineries to ship to New Jersey residents. Only one step remains and that is for Governor Chris Christie to sign the bill!

An email I received today from Cava Winery & Vineyard in New Jersey noted the Governor has only until January 19 to sign the bill.

According to the UncorkNJ website, “Consumers from every legislative district sent a strong message to Assembly members about the benefits of the bill, specifically, that the legislation will ensure the future of the NJ wine industry, stimulate agri-tourism, preserve farmland, create jobs and bring additional tax and fee revenue to the state.” To learn more about the bill and to send a message to encourage Governor Christie to sign the bill visit UncorkNJ’s website. (Be sure to read the post dated January 10, 2011 titled Historic Victory for NJ Wine Growers and Consumers.)

Hopefully Governor Christie recognizes the benefits of direct wine shipping and will sign the bill before the deadline. If he does not, the legislative process must begin again!

Cheers! Kathy
