Australian Wine Industry Supporting Flood and Cyclone Victims with a Large Raffle

Many Australian wineries and vineyards have suffered losses due to problems in the vineyards and the economy. Despite these losses they have set out to help those who have been devastated by the recent cyclone and floods in Queensland and Victoria as well as the recent cyclone in Australia.

A recent article on the website VisitVineyards.com, “Australian wine raffle for Victorian and Queensland flood and cyclone victims,” author Robyn Lewis wrote that more than 300 wineries and related businesses have donated more than A$240,000 goods including wine and related items for a goal of raising more than A$1 million.

Prize values range from 1st prize valued at A$33,000 to numerous prizes with a value of A$500. Included in the list are cases of wine, trips, magnums and books. One of the most unusual items available is the selection of Seppeltsfield Para Vintage Tawny marking the floods in Queensland with vintages 1893, 1916, 1974 and 2011. A pdf of the prizes is available.

Tickets are A$30 apiece with only 40,000 tickets available. Tickets are available until they are sold out or March 11. Tickets are available online or at wineries.

Hoping they have a very successful raffle!

Napa Valley-Looks at Climate Warming

Climate warming has been a buzz word since Al Gore made it popular a few years ago. Then for those who were not so sure of climate warming the term became global change.

Global change would significantly impact vineyards and therefore the wines you drink. Back in 2006 a researcher claimed that eventually Napa Valley would be too warm to grow quality wine grapes.

This week Napa Valley Vintners released a study, Climate and Phenology in Napa Valley: A Compilation and Analysis of Historical Data coauthored by Dr. Daniel R. Cayan, Dr. Kimberly Nicholas, Mary Tyree, and Dr. Michael Dettinger. This study included records dating back to the 1950’s. Information was gleaned from hand written notes as well as up to date weather stations throughout the valley. (More data was used in this study than in the previous 2006 study.)

The Napa Valley Vintners study found that Napa Valley has had one to two degrees warming over decades. This is much less than what had previously been thought. There has been little change in the daytime temperatures with temperature increase being at nighttime. The press release ends with encouraging news for wineries and vineyards, “Over the last several decades in growing season temperatures, there has been little warming in the daytime and the available observations provide little evidence that the growing cycle of the grapevines has changed substantially.”

Barrington Cellars Cincinnati Chili

Ingredients

1 pound lean ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1/2 cup Barrington Cellars Baco Noir
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt

Note: may substitute a dry red for the Baco Noir.
Directions

1. In a large saucepan or soup pot, brown the beef with the onion over medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes, or until no pink remains in the meat.
2. Drain off any excess liquid, then return the saucepan to the stove and add the remaining ingredients; mix well.
3. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
TIPS: This type of chili has the mole (pronounced “moe-lay”) flavoring that is popular in traditional Mexican cooking. And to make it authentic Cincinnati-style chili, serve it up over spaghetti and sprinkle finely shredded Cheddar cheese over the top.

How Are You Celebrating Super Bowl XLV Weekend?

With Super Bowl XLV this weekend, many of us don’t have tickets to the big game. It can be a lot of fun to watch the game on the screen whether it is at home or a winery. Check with your friendly neighboring winery to see if they have a large screen TV.

If you will be watching the game at home, you will want to prepare some nibbles whether it is Port Pecans, Sherried Walnuts or Crab Stuffed Mushroom Caps (recipe below.) The recipes for Port Pecans and Sherried Walnuts are located on the Wine Trail Traveler recipe section.

Enjoy Super Bowl Weekend!

Cheers, Kathy

1 oz large mushrooms, cooked
1 lb crabmeat (King or Snow crab)
1 green pepper, diced

2 eggs

Island Cream Sauce

½ pt heavy whipping cream
½ pt chicken stock
1/3 c Chardonnay
¼ c rum

February 1st Launch of Texas Twitter Tuesday

I just searched my wine cellar for a bottle of wine produced in Texas. My last Texan wine is a 2002 Paulo, a classic Bordeaux blend from Messina Hof Winery in Bryan. I’ll open it today and have it while viewing Twitter from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm CST. Bobby Champion, TDA (Texas Department of Agriculture) state coordinator for wine marketing will use the social media event to discuss the Texas wine industry, its successes in 2010 and the expected future growth. Yes, Texas has a wine industry. They are the fifth largest wine producing state in the country. If their growth in wineries continues, they may soon challenge the state of New York for fourth place in wine production.

The February 1st event is called Texas Twitter Tuesday and subsequent events will take place the first Tuesday of each month. Anyone with Internet access can follow the tweets by following #GoTexan or follow the tweets in the TweetChatRoom set up for the Texas Twitter Tuesday event.

Kathy and I have had the opportunity to visit and write about several Texas wineries. The first thing about Texas that comes to mind is Texan resilience. We visited a winery whose inventory was destroyed by a hurricane. Other Texan wineries quickly stepped in with wine for them. We visited another Texan winery that lost its wine and winery due to a flood. Now there is a new winery, restaurant, and bed and breakfast on higher ground. We met a winemaker/vineyardist who lost his grape crop three straight years. Rather than complaining he stated that the vines would reward him with a superior crop. One can’t deny the resilience of the Texan spirit.

I have a few questions for Bobby Champion. I’d like to know the percentage of wine produced in Texas with grapes sourced out of the state. I also wonder if this percentage is increasing or decreasing. Do Texas vineyards have a handle on Pierce’s disease? Have late spring frosts damaged the crops in recent years? Does it appear that the industry has saturated the wine market or will it continue to grow? Tune in to Twitter on February 1st for the first Texas Twitter Tuesday event.

Cheers,
Terry

22nd Annual Dream Gala “All Aboard for a Cure” Includes More Than 40 Wineries

Make plans to travel to Seattle, Washington for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s 22nd Dream Gala event to be held on March 5, 2011. More than 40 wineries are participating in this “All Aboard for a Cure” event. According to the JDRF Seattle Guild, “Owners and vintners will be sharing their passion and wine knowledge with the guests of our higher level sponsors. They will have specially paired wines from their individual libraries to pour with the dinner courses.”

The Gala also has an auction that includes winemaker’s dinners, art, entertainment and more. If you have something to donate to the auction visit the donation page.
