Wine Tasting Events for This Weekend

With beautiful spring weather here more events celebrating wine are scheduled. Below is a list of winery events from Wine Trail Traveler advertisers. Check them out as there is a wide variety of wine related events. One of the unique events is the Surviving Tax Day Weekend. An unfortunate note for Virginia wine lovers: In Virginia events involving barrel tastings are no longer allowed. If you are planning to attend a barrel tasting event in Virginia contact the winery. It appears that Prohibition is alive in Virginia. I wonder what Thomas Jefferson, a lover of wine, would say about it.

Cheers, Kathy

Wine Tasting Thousands of Miles Apart

A group of writers used Twitter to renew our friendships and taste wines together. This was our first tasting together since February 4th in Napoli, Italy. This time we tasted four Messina Hof wines. The day also reminded Kathy and me about our first Drink Local Wine Conference that was held in Texas and featured Texas wines. The Messina Hof Winery is in Bryan, Texas and owners Merrill and Paul Bonarrigo provided wines that would represent the grapes grown in Texas. Both Paul and Merrill were with us in Napoli. Their winery derives it name from their ancestors. The ancestors of Paul lived in Messina, Sicily while Merrill’s ancestors lived in Hof, Germany.

With others from our blogger/media IWINETC group, we tasted four wines. Our blogger friends are spread out from Southern California to New England as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Spain. The wines chosen by Messina Hof Winery were an excellent representation of what can be produced with Texas grapes. I noticed that the Cabernet Franc was fruit forward with no herbal traces. Not only can they ripen Cab Franc in Texas but the grape also develops some nice phenolics.

Our tasting and tweeting lasted for 90 minutes and everyone enjoyed the wines. Keeping what is becoming a signature of my wine comments, I wrote a haiku for each of the wines tasted.

Port Haiku:
Port, jammy, fruity
Drinking from a Port sipper
Now for a good book

2011 Late Harvest Moscato Haiku:
Floral aroma
Orange blossoms, smooth, ginger hint
Pair with summer temps

2009 Cab Franc Haiku:
Vanilla dark fruit
Texas can ripen Cab Franc
Velvet, fruity, spice

2009 Merlot Haiku:
Merlot black cherries
Fruity, violets, spicy
Delicious right now

This experience once again proves that wine is better when enjoyed by friends. Twitter is a vehicle that brought us together even though separated by thousands of miles.

Cheers,
Terry

IWINETC Blogger/Media FAM Wine Tasting

In the photo below the vineyard weeping does not correspond to our feelings on the day after taxes are due. Rather it is a sign of renewal and life about to spring forth. The last time our IWINETC blogger/media FAM group were all together, the February snows had made their way to Campania and whitened the vineyards with fluffy cool stuff. We wonder how many of those vineyards are now weeping.

Today marks a day that our blogger/media FAM group can spend some time tweeting each other and discussing some wine. Kathy and I are going to go Texan and enjoy some of Merrill’s and Paul’s Messina Hof wines. We plan to pair the 2009 Merlot and 2009 Cabernet Franc with some light snacks. The 2011 Late Harvest Moscato Mistella we’ll enjoy by itself. We’ll have to use our Port sippers for the 2005 Papa Paulo Port, our after dinner drink. We picked up the Port sippers on our first trip to Texas a few years ago.

Not trying to make anyone weep here other than vines, but the day also marks the day that our niece, Kathy, who has been battling leukemia will stay at our house for awhile. We are close to the hospital and they are allowing her to go to a relative’s home within a hour of the hospital. Northern Virginia is too far away for her to go to her home.  Our niece enjoys wine and hopefully she’ll be able to smell and taste a little of the Messina Hof wines. Kathy’s mother and/or her husband will be with us and they enjoy wine also.

Happy blogger/media FAM group Twitter day.

Cheers
Terry

2012 Drink Local Wine Conference

The 2012 Drink Local Wine Conference takes place in Denver, Colorado on April 28. The Drink Local Wine Conference began in 2009 and each year the annual Conference takes place in a different state. Previous conferences have taken place in Texas, Virginia and Missouri.

The 2012 sessions include “Colorado’s Terroir and the Challenges of High Altitude,” “Local Food, Local Wine, and Why They Don’t Like Each Other,” and “Consumer Perception of Colorado and Regional Wine.” At noon, there will be a Colorado Blind Challenge followed by lunch and then the Nomacorc-Colorado Twitter Taste-off.

The origin of the Drink Local Wine blog was the brainstorm of Jeff Siegel and Dave McIntyre. Jeff is from Texas and writer of the Wine Curmudgeon blog. Dave is from the East Coast and writes a wine column for the Washington Post as well as writing for numerous wine-related magazines. Drink Local Wine focuses on the 47 less known wine states.

If you have the opportunity to join the 2012 Drink Local Wine Conference in Denver, tickets are available online. Watch for the location of the 2013 Conference to be announced.

Hope to see you in Denver!

Cheers, Kathy

International Wine Tourism Conference in 2013

Tourism agents and travel wine specialists will want to consider attending the International Wine Tourism Conference in Croatia in 2013. Croatia is in the region associated with the birthplace of wine.

The 2013 IWINETC Conference takes place March 15 – 17. The conference will be held at Zagreb’s Regent Esplanade, a five star hotel. The program includes talks, workshops, panel discussions and symposiums.

IWINETC is a yearly conference focusing on the wine and tourism industry. Presentations can include a variety of topics but all evolve around wine, tourism and the connection between the two.

Those who are fortunate enough to attend an IWINETC familiarization tour will enjoy learning about the culture of the area including visiting local wineries, eating local foods and learning local history.

Having attended our first IWINETC Conference in 2012 held in Perugia, Italy, we participated in the blogger/media familiarization tour. It was one of the finest conferences and tours we have had access to. We hope to be included in the 2013 IWINETC Conference. As it is we are already planning presentations for the 2013 conference. After visiting 800 wineries, talking with many winemakers and viticulturists, and making our own wine, we have an atypical viewpoint of wine travel.

Registrations are being accepted online. An early bird special is available.

IWINETC is searching for people to speak at the conference. If you would like to present at the conference in Croatia, visit the Call for Papers online page.

Organizations who would like to be sponsors of the IWINETC should check this link.

Writer for Wine Trail Traveler Participating in March for Babies Fundraiser

On Sundays, I like to write about wine and a charity. Today I am featuring the March for Babies. Meghan Sullivan who writes for Wine Trail Traveler is participating in the March for Babies, sponsored by the March of Dimes.

Meghan Sullivan writes a series of articles, “Wine and the Bible” for each issue of the Wine Trail Traveler Quarterly. She also visits wineries and writes articles about the experiences. Meghan knows first hand about the difficulties that many premature babies encounter. She was born 10 weeks early and realizes how fortunate she was to have survived with no problems resulting from prematurity.

Below is an email Meghan wrote about her fundraising effort to help premature babies. We hope you will consider donating to this worthy cause.

Cheers! Kathy and Terry

“Through the efforts of physicians and the prayers of family and friends, I was able to survive a traumatic birth. I want to give other premature babies the chance to fight for their lives, so I am participating in the March for Babies, sponsored by the March of Dimes. During my early childhood, I participated in research conducted by the March of Dimes organization. I would like to give back to the March of Dimes so that the organization can continue to conduct research and prevent premature births. Please consider supporting my fundraising efforts by sponsoring me in the March for Babies. The walk is in Springfield, OH, on Saturday, May 12th.

Contributing to my march online is fast, easy and secure. You can donate directly by visiting my personal webpage: http://www.marchforbabies.org/masullivan85.

With your support, we can help make a difference in the lives of premature babies.

 Thank you for your consideration.

Blessings,
Meghan

Marinated Vegetable Salad for Vegetarians and Wine Lovers

The recipe below is likely a vegetarian’s delight. For anyone who likes to cook with wine, the salad dressing calls for 1/4 c of white wine. While the recipe is categorized as a salad or side dish, you might want to make more and serve it as a main dish. Consider serving it with soup or home baked bread. Enjoy!

Cheers! Kathy

IWINETC Blogger/Media FAM Wine Tasting

When you spend a couple weeks with a group on tour you begin to establish bonds. In January and February of this year we went on a blogger/media FAM tour of wineries in Umbria and Campania Italy. The trip also included the International Wine Tourism Conference in Perugia. We arrived in Italy a few days early and just happened to meet two other members of our group Jennifer Waters & Thaddeus Buggs of the Minority Wine Report. We spent time talking with the two and throughout the trip. Thaddeus likes older wines and we’re waiting for a time he will be in our area to try an old Petite Sirah.

Prior to the FAM tour we had met four of the other attendees. We met Paul and Merrill Bonarrigo a few years ago at their beautiful Messina Hof Winery in Bryan, Texas. In addition to the winery, they have vineyards, a restaurant and lodging facility. Their site can be the “poster child” for the agri-tourism movement. While on the bus, traveling the back roads through Umbria and Campania, Paul gave a narrative of the pruning system the area growers were using. We had previously met Marcy Gordon of Come for the Wine while attending a Wine Tourism Conference in Napa last autumn. We met Tom Plant, Wineormous, while traveling in the Temecula wine region of California.

During the two weeks, we had the opportunity to meet several other bloggers and media on our trip. The group became close enough that after the trek was over we were looking at ways to create a reunion. This was a challenge since we are scattered throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and France. We decided on a Twitter wine tasting. Bill Eyer, Cuvee Corner, suggested April 17 the day after tax returns were due in the US. Now that our taxes are done, we can use some wine. Next week many of our group will begin tweeting on wines. Although this will not be a physical reunion, wine can still bring people together and Twitter can become a vehicle for communicating with each other.

For the tasting, Kathy and I are going to open four Messina Hof wines. We have a 2009 Cabernet Franc, a 2009 Merlot, a 2011 Glory a late harvest Moscato and a 2005 Papa Paulo Port. It has been awhile since we had some Texas wine and we look forward to tasting these Messina Hof wines. There are many challenges in life. Wine, food and friends offers an island refuge that renews acquaintances and creates lasting memories.

Cheers,
Terry

2013 Cruise of New Zealand and Australia with the Owner of DelFosse Vineyards

From our experience one of the best ways to learn about wine is to visit wineries. If you’d rather not drive then consider a wine themed cruise that includes winery visits.

In January 2013, DelFosse Vineyards and Winery located near Charlottesville, Virginia is sponsoring a trip in New Zealand and Australia. Claude DelFosse, owner and vintner at DelFosse Winery & Vineyard will escort the New Zealand and Australia Wine-Themed Cruise. This cruise includes 12 nights with an option for one more day. Claude is experienced with escorting cruise trips as he has already escorted two other cruises: one to the Mediterranean and one to Burgundy and Provence.

The 2013 cruise includes sightseeing, leisure at sea and visits to wineries. The winery agenda includes visiting Waiheke Island with visits to Stonyridge Vineyard, Mudbrick Vineyard, and Cable Bay Vineyard. Later on, the cruise includes a visit to Tirohana Estate and Martinborough Winery.

Two optional tours are available and it is possible to add an extra night stay in Sydney.

The fare includes roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles, tours, 12 nights, taxes and gratuities. For details on the cruise visit http://www.yourcruisesource.com/d/10581483_36448.htm.
