Taster’s Guild Event in Columbia, Maryland: “Blanc-ity Blanc Wines”

Last evening we met about 30 others at Cafe de Paris in Columbia, Maryland for the group’s monthly wine tasting. The theme of the evening was “Blanc-ity Blanc Wines” with an emphasis on white wines that had the word blanc in them. So we tasted Chenin Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc and Ugni Blanc. The only wine that didn’t have a blanc in the grape’s name was our first wine from Schramsberg in California. This was a sparkling Blanc de Blanc; so it came close enough to qualify for our theme. The sparkling wine was made of Chardonnay and had a light straw color and  apple notes on the aroma and taste. It was nice to begin the tasting with a sparkling wine.

The next eight wines were paired in groups of two. Each group had a wine made with the same grape from a different wine region. During the wine pairings, different appetizers were placed on the tables. The first wine group pairing was with Chenin Blanc. The Le Haut Vinot Anjou, Anjou, France was a Chenin Blanc that was a straw color with tropical fruits and floral notes on the aroma and taste. The wine was slightly sweet. It would pair well with a rocking chair on a porch.   The Badenhorst Chenin Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa was quite a contrast. This Chenin Blanc was also a straw color and predominantly citrus and very dry. This paired well with our appetizer of tortilla chips and humus.

The next pairing matched two Pinot Blancs. Albert Seltz Pinot Blanc, Alsace, France was a straw color and slightly sweet. There were tropical fruits on the aroma and taste. The finish was fruity and dry. This wine was matched with Hofstatter Pinot Bianco from Italy. This straw colored Pinot Blanc was floral and citrusy with a very crisp finish. Again the French wine would do well as an aperatif while the Italian version could pair with appetizers.

Next up was the pairing of Sauvignon Blancs. The Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre from Sancerre, France had citrus and tropical notes. The Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand was the great disappointment for the evening. It was very herbaceous and had hints of mineral. The mineral was acceptable but I didn’t care for the herbaceousness.

Our final pairing was with a Granache Blanc. The Chapoutier Belleruche from Cote du Rhone, France was a blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc. The wine had a light yellow color with tropical fruits and citrus. It had an oily mouthfeel and crisp finish. The Las Colinas del Ebro Garnatxa Blanca was from Catalunya, Spain. This was also a light yellow color that offered citrus and mineral notes.

Our last offering was a brandy from Tariquet VS Classique from Bas Armagnac, France.  This brandy had a gold color. There was alcohol, caramel and vanilla on the aroma and the taste offered dried fruits.

One of the pleasures of attending Taster’s Guild events is that the other people there are also wine enthusiasts.

Cheers,
Terry

Catoctin Breeze Vineyard: A White Wine with Tannins

We recently returned from two week in the country Georgia. I became accustomed to white wines that had complex tastes and aromas, often accompanied by tannins some quite bold. Searching locally for a white wine that doesn’t look like water and has some tannins didn’t take as long as I thought. An hour from our hose in Central Maryland is Catoctin Breeze Vineyard in Thurmont. Owner, Voytek Fizyta and winemaker,  Mike Lentini produce a Vidal Blanc that reminds me of some of the white wines from Georgia.

The 2012 Vidal Blanc was a gold color. The color doesn’t come from the usual white winemaking protocol. Rather it comes from fermenting the juice with its skins and seeds. The darker color comes from the skins and tannins come from the seeds and skins. Traditional wines in Georgia are also made with the juice and the skins and seeds fermenting together like a red wine. Some winemakers may also add stems in Georgia.

Voytek and Mike pressed the wine after fermentation and then aged the wine. Fermenting on the skins produced a darker white wine then if they followed the usual white wine protocol of pressing the grapes before fermentation.  In Georgia, a land where grapes have been cultivated and wine made for 8,000 years, winemakers vary in protocol after fermentation. Some allow the wine and skins to remain together for years. The resulting wines are dark gold to amber and will have bold tannins. Other winemakers remove the pomace after fermentation.

The Cotoctin Breeze Vineyard Prelude Vidal Blanc 2012 with an image of Bach on the label was produced with grapes from St. Mary’s County. This wine was a golden color with an orange hue. The wine was fermented on the skins for three weeks. It offered a floral aroma with a taste of floral and a background of citrus. The finish had floral nuances and tannins.

Are Americans ready for white wines that have a complex aroma and taste with tannins? I’ve discovered that I enjoy any wines with complex aromas and tastes and the more tannins the better. I enjoyed the amber colored white wines in Georgia as well as the Cotoctin Breeze Prelude Vidal Blanc. I find white wines that look like water to be rather boring. White wines that are darker in color, I find more intriguing. Wine enthusiasts that enjoy bold red wines with bold tannins may also enjoy white wines with bold tannins. Market the wine correctly and you will find the group of wine drinkers that will like it.

One of the best outcomes of the drink local wine movement is the discovery of hidden gems that you personally enjoy. I realize that some of the wine drinking population would not care for the Prelude Vidal Blanc, while others may cherish it. Get out during this beautiful autumn weather and discover the local wineries. Try their portfolio of wines and discover what you may like.  Check out the Drink Local Wine website for information about drinking local.

Terry

Celebrate Texas Wine Trail Month During October

Texas Legato, Lampasas,TX

Wine trails come in all shapes and sizes. They can include large geographic areas or several wineries located within a few miles of each other. Some wine trails may include distillery visits or history sites.  If the wine trail has a website and prints advertising materials, there is likely a fee charged for each winery to belong to the trail. The fee covers development and updating of a website as well as printed materials that advertise the winery trail.  Wine trails offer the advantage of focusing on the wineries that belong, provide more publicity for them and coordinate activities between the participating wineries.

During October wineries have banded together in Texas Hill Country to celebrate the Texas Wine Month Trail. Thirty-six Hill Country wineries are participating in this month long event.

Choose the $25 ticket or the $40 ticket. The $25 ticket includes one to three complimentary tastings at each of the 36 wineries. Participants are also eligible for a 15 percent discount on three bottles of wine at all 36 wineries. The ticket can be used every day during October. The $40 ticket entitles participants to the above plus  attending the Texas Wine Month Kick-off Tasting  on Friday, October 4. Tickets to the Kick-off include 10 tastings, light appetizers and a wine glass.

Susan G Komen for the Cure

For each ticket sold, $5 will be donated to the  Susan G Komen for the Cure.

For more details and tickets be sure to visit the Texas Hill Country Wineries website.
