Fielding Estate Winery is located in Beamsville, Ontario. Upon entering the Fielding Estate Winery tasting room, we discovered a warm welcome. Karley Beach gave us a tour of the facility and conducted our wine tasting. Visitors can enjoy sitting on the patio in Adirondack-like chairs to enjoy the Fielding wines and look over vineyards, the Beamsville Bench to Lake Ontario and beyond. Karley noted that on a clear day one can see Toronto.
Ken and Marg Fielding are the owners of Fielding. In 2000 they decided they wanted to create a winery that is laid back and showed the roots of their home in Minden Ontario. They also wanted a tasting room where people can enjoy wine and the atmosphere. To do so they built a cottage style lodge to house the winery and the tasting room. The winery tasting room opened in 2005.
The Fieldings’ son, Curtis is the General Manager. Grape Growers of Ontario recently awarded the prestigious 2012 Grape King to Curtis.
Tasting Room
From the outside, the facility appears to be one level. Visitors enter into the tasting room and are quickly welcomed. Floor to ceiling windows behind the tasting counter provide visitors with views of prolific vineyards. Views of Lake Ontario can be seen in the distance.
To the right of the tasting counter another wall of windows offers views of stainless steel tanks with a walkway around them. The walkway is on the same level as the tasting room floor. The stainless steel tanks are sitting on a lower level. Visitors can easily observe the tops of the tanks. Natural light floods the area from the windows and skylights above. The glass walls gives a feeling of spaciousness and visitors can easily observe the tasks in the winery.
Fielding Estate Vineyards
Today the 12 acres of onsite vineyards are planted with Riesling and Chardonnay. Another five minutes closer to Lake Ontario, an additional 36 acres vineyard includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and
Gewürztraminer.
Wine Tasting
Our tasting began with a Brut produced with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This light straw color wine offered apple notes. It was crisp and refreshing. Lot No 17 Riesling was from a block of 17 rows of Riesling just beyond the willow tree as seen from the tasting room. The wine was a light straw color. The aroma was of honeysuckle and peach. The taste also had peach notes with lime. The finish was crisp and somewhat sweet at three percent residual sugar. This is a 3P (patio, porch, pool) wine.
Red Conception 2009 was a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This ruby colored wine offered an aroma of dark fruit with a taste of blackberries, black cherries and a hint of plum. The finish had tannins, was crisp and fruity. Cabernet Syrah 2010, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah with a splash of Cabernet Franc was a ruby color. The aroma was of dark fruits and spice. The taste had notes of pepper and dark fruits especially plum and blackberry. The finish was fruity with bold tannins. Meritage 2007 was a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
